Irvine fastest in first practice

Ferrari have the upper hand after first practice in Canada, Eddie Irvine and Michael Schumacher are over a second quicker than the opposition

Mika Hakkinen is in trouble, spinning into the gravel at the second hairpin on his first attempt at a quick lap. He lost the last third of the session. Alex Zanardi barely left the pits before suffering another gearbox failure.

Another strong run from Alesi gave him 4th place, but team mate Diniz is way down after an early crash in turn one.

Home hero Villeneuve is 7th, but the star of the session looked like being Luca Badoer, who was in the top ten for some time in his Minardi. He eventually slipped to 14th.

The Jordans were slightly off the pace. Both Frentzen and Hill had off track excursions en route to 10th and 11th
