Indy boss not unhappy with GP finish
Indianapolis Motor Speedway boss Tony George is taking the view that all publicity is good publicity on the subject of Ferrari's formation finish that went wrong in last Sunday's United States Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher made the mistake of handing victory to his team-mate Rubens Barrichello as the pair crossed the finish line side-by-side. George was waving the chequered flag.
In an Autosport.com vote on Monday, 68 percent of our readers reckoned that the incident will harm F1's standing in the US.
But George told the Indianapolis Star: "People are certainly talking about the event."
But he admitted that the lower than expected crowd attendance figure was disappointing. Despite estimates ranging from 150,000 to 170,000 for Sunday, the figure was actually closer to 125,000.
"On balance it's a little below our expectations," George admitted. "But that's where [interest] is at the moment and we have to build from there."
In the three years that the US GP has been run at Indy, the crowd has dropped every year. The inaugural race in 2000 pulled 200,000, while last year's event attracted 175,000.
