Herta looks for F1 test seat
Champ Car driver Bryan Herta is looking to become the first American Formula 1 driver for almost 10 years by bagging a test deal for 2002
Herta, 31 visited the Arrows team last week and after losing his seat in CART when the Forsythe Championship Racing team closed its doors last month, he believes he is ready to make the switch.
"Well that's where I'd like to see myself [in Formula 1]," Herta told this week's AUTOSPORT magazine. "Right now it's a case of me expressing my interest in doing it. I'm 31 now, so I'm young enough, but it's now or never."
An American has not competed in F1 since Michael Andretti in 1993, but Herta's timing and nationality could play to his advantage. The sport has never fully broken into the US market and, Dieter Mateschitz, boss of Arrows sponsor Red Bull is also keen to start up an all-American F1 team.
"Certainly there has been a lot of talk about an American driver coming to F1," he said. "I'm confident in my own ability to do a good job in F1, given the opportunity. I want to see if I can get a test, and see what happens."
