Grapevine: Wheldon linked with BMW

BMW have emerged as the most likely contenders to snap up Indy Racing League driver Dan Wheldon on a testing deal next year - as the man himself declined to comment on mounting speculation about his future on Monday

Reports at the weekend suggested that Wheldon would this week sign a deal with a Formula One team, with the suggestion being that Williams, BMW or BAR-Honda were favourite to take on his services. It is believed Wheldon will take a test deal for 2006 before making the jump to a race drive the year after.

But with sources at Williams and BAR dismissing their involvement in any negotiations with Wheldon, a firm 'no comment' from BMW about the situation has only served to fuel the possibility of a link with the German car manufacturer.

With Wheldon out of contract with his Andretti Green Racing team from midnight tonight, it is possible that an announcement about the Indianapolis 500 winner is imminent.

That likelihood is increasing with the man himself keen to not let slip his plans on Monday, and refusing to deny the possibility of a move to F1.

When contacted by Autosport to talk about the speculation, Wheldon issued a firm no comment.

"I've been told that I cannot say anything," he said.
