Grapevine: Walker relishing F1 return
Commentating legend Murray Walker has said he is relishing his return to Formula One this season after agreeing a deal to join BBC Radio Five Live
Walker, who will provide interview, previews and reviews during the season, was speaking in front of an enthusiastic audience on stage at a '100 Years of Grand Prix Racing' dinner at the Autosport International Show.
"I missed F1," he admitted, after receiving a standing ovation as he took to the stage in front of a host of racing stars including David Coulthard, John Surtees, Jody Scheckter and John Watson.
"I am not going to be doing commentary, but I have been asked to do previews, reviews, interviews and that sort of thing. It will keep me in touch with the sport I love.
"Those of you who have worked in F1 know it is a fantastic life, because you are doing something you love. It is your passion, and you get to stay in lovely hotels dealing with like-minded, very bright, fast-moving, high-stepping ambitious achievers. It is wonderful to be in.
"I didn't stop commentating because I wanted to, I stopped because I thought it was time I did. I had done it for 53 years and age withers you. I wanted to stop with dignity when I felt I was nearer the top than the bottom, and I am going to enjoy being on the radio."
Walker may also twin his involvement in BBC Radio Five Live with commentary on the new Grand Prix Masters series, although he has not yet signed a deal.
