Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher is one of five nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award.

Schumacher, who won his third title last year with the Ferrari team, will compete for the honour alongside golf number one Tiger Woods, Olympic swimming champions Pieter van den Hoogenband and Ian Thorpe, and five times Olympic rowing gold medalist Steve Redgrave.

Olympic athletics champions Marion Jones and Cathy Freeman will fight for the World Sportswoman of the Year award together with Olympic swimming gold medalist Inge de Bruijn, Australian golfer Karrie Webb and tennis star Venus Williams, who won last year's Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Olympic titles.

World and European soccer champions France, Olympic soccer champions Cameroon, European Cup winners Real Madrid, the New York Yankees baseball team and Australia's cricket team were selected for the World Team of the Year award.

The nominations, which were announced at a news conference in Berlin on Tuesday, were submitted by a panel of over 300 sports journalists. The World Sports Academy, featuring 39 top sports personalities, will elect the winners at a ceremony on May 22 in Monaco.
