Anderlecht and Feyenoord soccer clubs have signed up for the new Premier1 Grand Prix motor racing series due to be launched in 2002, organisers said on Thursday.
Anderlecht and Feyenoord soccer clubs have signed up for the new Premier1 Grand Prix motor racing series due to be launched in 2002, organisers said on Thursday.
The Belgian and Dutch sides join Portugal's Benfica and England's Leeds United as the four so far committed to the championship that will see cars racing in their colours when it starts up next July. Top Spanish, French and German clubs are due also to be announced by the end of the month.
"Through participation will Feyenoord be visible all year long and uniting the two most popular sports in the world in the Premier1 Grand Prix series is not only innovative, it will most surely be appreciated by the fans," said Feyenoord president Jorien Van den Herik.
The first of 10 races scheduled for next season starts in Portugal on July 14, after soccer's World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
There will be a 24-driver grid, using identical Reynard-built single-seat cars with each one representing a top soccer club. The championship aims to appeal to both motor racing and soccer fans.
