Gerhard Berger Q&A
A fourth consecutive pole position for Juan Pablo Montoya at Silverstone was followed by a fourth consecutive failure to convert it into a victory, but at least on this occasion the Colombian led in fine style in the early laps. Even when it rained he hung on in there and kept at least some pressure on Ferrari on his way to third place, although we don't know how hard Messrs Schumacher and Barrichello had to push. If nothing else the result put Williams and BMW back on track for second place in the constructors' championship, while reliability was good on both cars. Adam Cooper asked Gerhard Berger for his thoughts on the race
"A great job, with no mistakes. It was the maximum we could achieve. We achieved what we could achieve in being first behind the Ferraris, and the Ferrari is impossible to beat at the moment. We got some extra points on McLaren. Ralf's problem with the fuel rig is not in our hands. So altogether we had a good race, but it's just if you look at the dominance of Ferrari, it's in the shadow of something like this."
"No, because we experienced on Friday that the rain tyres are quite good now, much better. Of course I was hoping rain or no rain, but these were the conditions. But at least it gave us a very, very clear picture of where we are strong and where we are not."
"It's usually very much up to the tyres, so Michelin has to work on it."
"Well, the problem is that you don't have rain every two weeks, so it's easy to forget the problem a little bit. But on a day like this you have it."
"I still think there's room to improve. Let's say that!"
"I wouldn't say there's not too much to show. Look back at Canada - we were fighting until the end, then we unfortunately had a reliability problem. Today we finished third. If you asked me before the race I would have said, OK, I don't think we are going to be beat Ferrari, we can just do our best job and if they have a problem we are going to be there. And that's what we did."
"Yes, a little bit. In qualifying Ralf clearly had a bit too much understeer, and Nurburgring was a bit unfair, because Ralf was on the harder tyre and Juan was on the softer tyre. They had a very similar lap time in the end, but one was on pole and one was second, and you talk about the pole. At the end of the day for me Ralf was on the pole for the performance. It happens sometimes. One driver gets more confident and the other one loses a little bit. It's very important for us as a team to get him there again, because he has similar potential."
