Fry: radical rear wing needs more work

BAR boss Nick Fry believes that more work needs to be done on the radical double rear-wing that will be adopted by Formula One for 2008 at the latest to be sure it is the right way for the sport to go

Although the Formula One Commission approved the design at a meeting last week, the Centreline Downwash Generating rear wing still needs to be ratified by eight members of F1's Technical Working Group for it to be adopted by 2007.

And Fry believes that such support may not be easy to reach because, he claims, extensive work needs to take place to be sure that it will be suitable for F1.

"I think a lot more work needs to be done to ensure it is the right answer," Fry said today. "We're one of the biggest proponents of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technology but it only gives you a good guide for what you should be doing, it doesn't have the resolution to give you all the answers.

"I feel more work, more modelling and more wind tunnel tests need to be done to make sure that this new rear wing proposal really is the way to go."

Fry has also said that his team are not massively in favour of the return of tyre changes next year - because their supplier Michelin appeared to have the edge with the single race tyre.

"We're not quite as keen on the change in tyre regulations as those of us on Michelin tyres clearly had a big advantage over our Bridgestone rivals on the one race tyre," he said. "However, I've got full confidence in Michelin's technical capabilities and I'm sure they will still be fully competitive next year."

Fry's doubts about the new regulations come despite the changes getting the necessary support from the F1 Commission.
