Fisichella aims to stay at Renault in 2007

Giancarlo Fisichella is aiming to stay at the Renault team in 2007, although the Italian driver claims he is keeping his options open

The Roman driver has a year of his contract left to run, just like teammate and World Champion Fernando Alonso, but team boss Flavio Briatore told Autosport last week that Finn Heikki Kovalainen was likely to race for Renault in 2007.

"We have invested a lot in him and he is an asset that we have to look after," said Briatore of Kovalainen, who will be Renault's third driver in 2006.

"We want him to drive 30-40 thousand kilometers next year to be ready to race in 2007. It is 90 percent likely that will be with Renault, and 10 percent with another team."

Fisichella, however, says his intention is to remain with the team after the end of his current contract.

"At the moment my primary objective is to stay in this team in 2007 too, but without forgetting there will be 14 or 15 seats available in one year's time," Fisichella told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I'll have to see who will offer the best guarantees."

The Renault driver said his goal for next year is to win the Championship.

"With Fernando there is a good friendship," he added. "The fact that he's a champion will make my will to beat him greater. I'm not hiding the fact that I'm going for the big prize.

"I hope I'll have better luck than in 2005. Sometimes it was a nightmare, with the weekends starting with an uphill struggle in qualifying."
