Firman thrilled after outqualifying Fisi

Ralph Firman reckoned that he put in one of his best laps of the year to outqualify Jordan team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella for the Japanese Grand Prix. The Briton will start the race 15th, one spot ahead of the Italian

F1 rookie Firman has an intimate knowledge of the Suzuka track from his Formula Nippon days, and used this to full advantage in qualifying. However, both Firman and Fisichella are hoping for rain to allow them to compete at the sharp end in the race.

"That was possibly one of my best laps all year," said Firman. "This is the only circuit where I feel I am on equal terms with Giancarlo and everyone else because I know it well. I'm really happy with the balance of the car and it's worked well although obviously we'd like to be quicker. Hopefully if it rains tomorrow it could be a good weekend for us. It's great to be racing here again."

Fisichella will also be hoping for rain tonight. "I'm a bit frustrated with how it's gone so far especially as it's my last weekend with Jordan," said the future Sauber driver. "We are not quick enough for some reason - I don't know why, but it isn't good. Anyway, I hear that tomorrow may be wet and I'm hoping it will be, as that would give us a better chance."
