FIA Institute holds first American meeting
The FIA Institute will hold its first ever North American symposium in Montreal tomorrow, with open-wheel safety research on the agenda
The Institute president, Professor Sid Watkins, will chair the one-day event, and a delegation of representatives for the FIA Institute will present updates on current research projects, including prevention of cars launching during accidents, wheel restraints, and ear accelerometers.
A spokesman for the FIA Institute said: "This research will have a major bearing on the development of future Formula One cars as the Institute continues to strive to bring the safest possible measures into the sport.
"A number of teams have already offered their support to these projects with teams like Red Bull Racing and Toyota providing car parts for testing.
"The meeting [in Montreal tomorrow] will be open to representatives of the motorsport safety industry, North American motorsport safety experts, F1 drivers and technical personnel."
The spokesman added that Formula One drivers will also be enlisted in the development of a new safety handbook, which will be aimed at all new motor racing drivers.
"The aim of the handbook is to educate the younger drivers and remind the more experienced drivers about all aspects of safety in motor sport," the spokesman said.
"Once completed, it is planned for the handbook to be distributed to every new competition licence holder."
