Ferrari begins major testing effort
Ferrari brandished the kind of determination and resources that other teams will have to strive for, to beat it hands down, by launching a three circuit test programme before the Austrian Grand Prix.
Rubens Barrichello started the test programme in Fiorano, with Felipe Massa in Monza. Michael Schumacher is expected to give his input in Mugello sometime later this week.
Barrichello drove a new F2003-GA, concentrating on development work and tyre testing. The Brazilian completing 117 laps with a fastest time of 57.413s.
Fellow Brazilian Felipe Massa drove an old F2002 at Monza, standard practice for a tyre test. He completed 415 Km but no times were issued by Ferrari, and no other teams were present to provide them. The track was modified to simulate the kinds of corners experienced at the A-1 Ring - where the team put in a dominant, if somewhat controvertial, performance in 2002.
Barrichello continues testing at Fiorano tomorrow, and Massa at Monza. Williams, Toyota and Sauber also started testing today and will be joined by four other teams at Paul Ricard tomorrow.
