Lap 19: Fisichella goes off at turn four. Frentzen pulls away from Hakkinen. Schumacher takes Coulthard and attempts move on Hakkinen.

Lap 18: Rain starts, as Schumacher unsuccessfully challenges Coulthard.

Lap 17: Irvine takes Fisichella as the Italian goes wide.

Lap 16: Hakkinen closing on Frentzen. Alesi (14th) fastest driver on this lap.

Lap 15: Top sx remains the same.

Lap 14: Fisichella continues to hold off Irvine. Frentzen leads by 0.4s.

Lap 13: Top four - Frentzen, Hakkinen, Coulthard and Schumacher - pulling clear of Fisichella and Irvine. Irvine 8.5s behind leaders.

Lap 12: Zanardi's car recovered by stewards.

Lap 11: Alex Zanardi (Williams) has spun out after tripping over Takagi (Arrows) and Zonta (BAR) and has apparently stalled on the track.

Lap 10: Irvine swarming all over Fisichella. Frentzen leads by 0.5s.

Lap nine: Top six: Frentzen, Hakkinen, Coulthard, Schumacher, Fisichella, Irvine.

Lap eight: Hakkinen closes lead to 0.482s and sets fastest lap (1.22.711).

Lap seven: Eddie Irvine (Ferrari) takes Panis to move up to sixth. Frentzen leads by 0.75s.

Lap six: Safety car returns to pits. Race resumes.

Lap five: Alex Wurz also out following first lap accident. Dark clouds looming over Nurburgring.

Lap four: Safety car still out. Top six: Frentzen (Jordan), Hakkinen, Coulthard (both McLaren), Schumacher (Williams), Fisichella (Benetton) and Panis (Prost).

Lap three: Pedro Diniz is lifted out of his car. The Brazilian gives a thumbs up to spectators. Safety car still out.

Lap one: The safety car is out after Pedro Diniz's Sauber overturned following a collision with Alex Wurz's Benetton. Damon Hill is also out.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen leads the European Grand Prix, ahead of McLaren's Mika Hakkinen.

1300BST: The start of the European Grand Prix has been aborted after a number of drivers - including Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Mika Hakkinen - jumped the lights.

David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher were also among the drivers to move off the line before the lights went out.

However, the drivers are unlikely to be penalised as the start would have been aborted due to Marc Gene's Minardi stalling on the grid before the lights went out.
