Ecclestone hints at London GP
Up to seven F1 teams have agreed to provide cars for a demonstation run along London's Regent Street on July 6, in a plan cooked up by supremo Bernie Ecclestone to promote this year's British Grand Prix. But Ecclestone has refused to deny suggestions that the city could stage a race in the future
When asked if he would consider a London Grand Prix, Ecclestone told BBC 5 Live that "anything is possible." This is not considered a realistic possibility at this stage however and his comments have been seen as a way of putting further pressure on Silverstone to find a new promoter for the British round of the F1 World Championship.
Considering the logistical and policing problems involved with running a major motorsport event in the city centre, as well as government approvals and the significant financial investment required to see such a project turned into reality, the idea is considered an outside possibility at best.
With regards to the demonstration run, plans are moving ahead with team owners enthusiastic about the concept. Ecclestone's plan is understood to envisage a route down Regent Street and round Trafalgar Square. "There's a very good chance this is going to happen," Ecclestone said. "We're working on it."
BAR-Honda team principle David Richards is one of several team bosses to approve of the demonstration: "I've been very supportive of the idea of running F1 cars in central London. This is a great opportunity to take the cars closer to the public, and what better setting than in Regent Street? It is a great chance to promote the whole sport."
