Drivers' Title is Renault's Main Aim

While rivals would expect Briatore to say that in his position, with his Spanish driver Fernando Alonso poised to become the youngest champion, the Italian said the drivers' title had most resonance.

"When you apply to the championship, it is the FIA drivers' championship," he told a news conference at the Belgian Grand Prix on Friday.

"It isn't the FIA Manufacturers' or Constructors' Championship. You remember Schumi (Michael Schumacher) won with Ferrari, you never remember this year somebody won the Constructors' Championship with another team.

"The Drivers' Championship is the only one," said Briatore.

Alonso, 24, needs to score four points more than McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen on Sunday to become champion.

Renault could win both titles this year, with an eight point lead over McLaren in the constructors' standings.

Mercedes-powered McLaren have won the last three races however and will again be favourites at Spa.

Ferrari's Schumacher has won the last five Drivers' Championships, but is now out of contention for the first time since 1999, while Ferrari have taken the last six constructors' crowns but are now struggling in third place.

Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn said there were some at Ferrari who felt the constructors' title was more important even if the public might disagree.

"I think they are both very important," he said. "Outside of Formula One think most people recognise who won a drivers' championship, you don't get so much reference to the constructors'."
