David Coulthard Q&A
David Coulthard has notched up 16 points over the past two races, a score that seemed highly unlikely a few weeks ago. At one point it seemed that Renault had a chance of edging McLaren out of third place, but now the team has Williams in its sights and the battle for second is on again. As in Monaco good strategy and a near faultless drive from Coulthard were the keys to a good performance on a track that in theory should not have suited the car. His inspired pass of Rubens Barrichello involved a little short cut, but he didn't have to hand the place back as the Brazilian followed him across the chicane
"I was obviously heavy, and it's easy to get drawn into over driving when the guys have gone away from you, but in the end it also saved me a bit of brakes. It's nice when you realise those things when you're going along. The only thing that I do right was to keep pushing until I joined the back of the safety car, and that allowed Montoya to get out in front of me, which was my mistake. But ultimately he was quicker so he would have passed me somewhere anyway, and the chances are I would have lost time with him doing it."
"Absolutely. When we get more downforce on the car it tends to perform a bit better. So relatively we should be in better shape. At Nurburgring, the next one, they've tightened up the first corner so that may mean the overall downforce level increases for the lap."
"I think it would be a major achievement in terms of my team if we were to do that, because it would show that despite not having the performance in terms of lap time we've got the reliability. Realistically we all know that it's unlikely to happen."
"I've more than doubled my points. It's the way racing goes, isn't it? We're going to pop in there occasionally if the guys at the front aren't as strong. Williams look a bit marginal on reliability, Ferrari look solid as ever."
"I don't like it. I like to be at the front. It's easier at the front - it's difficult amongst all the nutters! They're all over the place..."
"You've got to be a realistic. We finished second, but he backed off, and he would have been a mile down the road. I'm sure he's realising that it's not about making it look like that, and if you make it closer then it keeps people interested. It's a good, solid second, because our strategy beat Rubens today, so we'll take that."
"I'm sure it's true. I'm sure that he's just taking each race as it comes. When you've won a few championships you don't have to be worried about whether you're going to win one or not, do you?"
"I think they are going to change the profile of the corner for next year. It's just a bit messy. It doesn't add anything to the racing, really. I agree with Rubens that it is one place to overtake, but it could be a hairpin. They've got enough space with the run off that they could put a hairpin and then another one. It might make it a little more Mickey Mouse, but equally you may need to run more downforce, which improves the racing in some respects as well."
