David Coulthard Q&A
There were some very disappointed faces in the McLaren camp at the end of the Australian GP. While the team knew that it was lacking speed, nobody expected the situation to be quite so bad. Although Albert Park is an oddball circuit and the situation may be slightly different come Malaysia, clearly there's a lot of work to do. Indeed Sepang will be the first anniversary of the team's last victory. David Coulthard had hoped that his final season with the team would allow him a chance to shine, but at the moment, it doesn't look too promising. Adam Cooper spoke to the Scot.
"Yeah, from where we were. It was the right thing to do."
"I was behind Sato, losing a little bit of time, but not that much. If he hadn't been there I still think the guys up front would have dropped us. We just weren't quick enough at any point in the race."
"Yeah. I think we need to up the laps available now on Friday and Saturday, to give us more time to work on set up, and find the edge of the track."
"You'll have to ask Ilmor how much they were backing out. I tried not to get drawn too much into what they were going to give us, because I was trying to set the car up."
"We're not where we should be in any of the areas. We don't have a quick enough package at the moment, whether that be car or engine."
"Not really, because that's what everyone's working on during the winter."
"I think people got their stuff out earlier. The rules have been stable for a few years now. They can call it a new car, but for all we know it's the same car with different bodywork! I don't think there's the same pressure to come up with something new and fantastic, it just needs to be quick and reliable."
"We've got a test, and we'll just try to develop the package. But I think we need to improve in all areas. You can see clearly that there are other Michelin runners out there going faster, so we have to look to the car and engine package."
"Yes, I think so. There are higher speed corners, so the car might start to perform a little bit better. We'll wait and see. I think we're looking a little less competitive at the moment than we were this time last year."
"It's not good. As a grand prix driver you want to drive a grand prix car, you want to be on the circuit, the spectators want to see the cars, and that's where the action is. We all get bored talking about it in the paddock. Soon a grand prix will be one lap - there will be a shootout and that will be it!"
"I wasn't watching everyone else, but apparently it was as long as a grand prix or longer, so that can't be right. It should count for something. Why have one lap as a warm-up? Why not have them both count?"
"I didn't see anything wrong with the old four lap qualifying system..."
