Daniel Ricciardo: Hamilton and Vettel deserve F1 penalties in Mexico
Daniel Ricciardo believes Formula 1 rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel should both be penalised for their driving during the Mexican Grand Prix
The Red Bull driver finished fourth in Sunday's Mexico City F1 race, after team-mate Max Verstappen was penalised for going off track defending third place from Vettel's Ferrari in the closing stages.
That also promoted Vettel to third, but Ricciardo believes the Ferrari driver should be penalised for moving under braking as Ricciardo tried to overtake the Ferrari on the inside of Turn 4 where the pair made contact.
"I just felt Seb did what everyone's been complaining about lately - moving under braking," Ricciardo told TV crews after the race.
"He's smiling now. For me he doesn't deserve to be up there [on the podium] with that move he pulled.
"He just kept closing the door under braking. I've locked the brakes to try to avoid contact, but he kept closing, so in the end I had nowhere to go.
"We [should] make a protest, because for me it's what everyone's been complaining about lately, and he's done it to me today.
"Don't get me wrong, I love racing hard. I love seeing locking brakes, even a bit of contact is fine, but this whole moving under braking - if you're going to defend you commit early and that's it.
"You make your bed. You don't move once you've already been out-foxed.
"I felt that's what I did today - Seb was there, he moved, I went, I won the chess match, and then he's like 'oh, I've screwed up, now I'm going to try and repair my mistake'.
"For me that's not right."
Ricciardo also feels race winner Hamilton should be sanctioned by officials, for locking up and running off track at Turn 1 while defending the lead on the opening lap.
On his slowing down lap after the race, Ricciardo suggested there should be a "fucking wall there" to prevent drivers getting away with mistakes.
"I didn't understand the start - how you can be leading the race, defend, lock your wheels and go off track, and still stay in the lead," Ricciardo added.
"Lewis deserved a penalty - anyone in that position deserves a penalty.
"I saw Max cut the chicane trying to defend Seb. He got a penalty, so I don't know what was that different with his move and Lewis's.
"For me, if you lock up the brakes and cut the corner, it's a mistake. You have to pay the price."
