Coulthard takes the blame

David Coulthard admitted he was to blame for the accident which sent him crashing out of the lead of the European Grand Prix - and probably the championship

'I locked the front wheels and unfortunately I couldn't regain control and went straight off into the barriers,' said the Scot after spinning off on lap 37 of 67.

'Its my fault and I feel sorry for the team because the way I was driving and the car was going meant we were going to get 10 points today.

'I had a nine second lead and could have won. I am very disappointed with myself.

'The only consolation is that the others in the title chase did not get too many points but that doesn't move me any closer to the front of the championship.

'I'm disappointed with myself for making that mistake because otherwise were in good shape and this is a missed opportunity to score 10 points.'

The Scot now trails teammate Mika Hakkinen by 14 points with two races remaining.

Team boss Ron Dennis said, 'David learn't to finish first you first have to
finish.

'I do not feel anything but relief at coming out with a couple of points lead in the championship having participated in one of the best races we have seen in a long time.'
