Coulthard sets the record straight

David Coulthard has told AUTOSPORT that he believes McLaren has found the extra speed that will allow it to challenge Ferrari for this year's world championship

"We have taken a significant step forward in terms of the car," he said. "As a package, I don't know yet, but it is a quicker racing car than last year. It has better balance and more downforce."

The new MP4-17 has set the pace in testing so far this year, although it is yet to go head-to-head with its main rivals, but Coulthard is steering clear of making any bold predictions.

In an in-depth interview in this week's AUTOSPORT magazine, the Scot talks about the frustration of how each new season is seen as 'his' year.

"I have never, ever, said this is the year I am going to win the world championship. I have never said that because I don't know what the future holds.

"What I have said, though, is I do have what it takes to win the world championship? Yes I do. Why do I believe that? Because I have won individual grand prix and I have been dicing for the championship."
