Button 'a star of the future' says Head
Jenson Button had a troublefree day at Jerez, and his 36 laps impressed Williams technical director Patrick Head.
The 19-year-old set a best time of 1m25.75s in the Williams BMW, just 1.4s slower than McLaren's David Coulthard.
Button, who is in contention with Brazil's Bruno Junqueira for the drive, said: 'Testing for the BMW-Williams team has been a terrific experience for me.
'Competing at the highest level has always been my ambition, and it doesn't really get much higher than this as far as top-level Formula 1 teams are concerned.'
The three-day test has been interrupted by technical problems, and the two hopefuls are going to Barcelona for a further test this week.
A decision on who will race the car will be made shortly after.
Patrick Head said: 'Jenson has done a very good job today. In view of the limited mileage that we have achieved, Jenson settled into the FW21B and set some quick lap times.
'He is remarkably mature for a 19-year-old, and definitely a star of the future.'
