Briatore Q&A

Renault's performance has been one of the major stories of the 2002 season so far, and in all three races the cars have been near the sharp end of the field. In Australia Jarno Trulli avoided the first corner shunt and ran in front of Michael Schumacher before eventually spinning off. A suspension problem cost Jenson Button third place in Malaysia, but he still finished fourth, and then repeated that result in Brazil. At Interlagos both Renaults ran ahead of the McLarens for half the race, and while the silver cars arguably could have gone a lot quicker in clean air, it was nevertheless a massive step forward from this time last year, when both car and engine were causing problems. Adam Cooper spoke to team boss Flavio Briatore about the upswing in fortunes

"Racing the McLarens was enjoyable. I had good fun, and it's been a long time since I had fun in racing! Brazil and Malaysia were good races for our team. We were not expecting to race the McLarens, sure, but we are there. We had very good starts, fantastic performances from both drivers, and Jenson was very, very quick."

"We know McLaren was quicker than us in the pit stop, but we know they put less fuel in. But you're fighting and you're racing. This is our job, and it's enjoyable. Sure, we're missing performance in the engine, we're missing performance in the chassis, but we are working hard and we have very good developments coming. In Imola we'll have something better, and in Barcelona we'll have a big step, and we'll continue like that."

"Obviously for us our target was to be fourth. It was already kind of an ambitious target. Now we are there, so we'll see. We're already looking in front, and the next in front is McLaren."

"We are in good shape, I think. I didn't expect to be so competitive with the first year of Renault, really, after the disaster we had last year. But we have made an incredible reaction, and we are there. Now we have to keep working very hard to have a better car and a better engine."

"Everybody's been talking about Pat. Pat has a contract with us and he's very happy to stay with us. I don't see any reason why there was all this speculation. It was a little bit too much."

"It's very good. The two drivers are very, very friendly, and there's a good relationship between Jarno and Jenson. They have a fantastic relationship with the team and the engineering people."

"Sure, it's the right way to go. It's possible to do the same event with less investment for the manufacturers, and it's very good from the technology point of view. F1 is about technology, and it's very good to have an F1 engine do 800-900kms. We're not taking anything away from the technical stuff, but we're putting more importance on it."
