BRDC board accepts criticism

The under-fire board of the BRDC has accepted that it got it wrong in failing to explain enough to club members about plans to redevelop Silverstone before the recent failed vote, autosport.com has learned

After a vote on plans to revamp the circuit with developers St. Modwen was postponed because a number of BRDC members were angry about a lack of information surrounding the move, plans have been put in place to call a vote of no confidence against the Board.

However, in a letter written to club members this week, a copy of which has been seen by autosport.com, the BRDC board has said that it was disappointed the vote was not taken but accepted that it was partly to blame for the situation.

"The EGM on 22nd February clearly expressed widespread views and concerns from Members that the Board's recommendation to proceed to a conclusion with St. Modwen and Northern Racing as future partners at Silverstone needed more information and time before Members were ready to vote," said the letter.

"Despite eleven information letters prior to the EGM concerning the joint venture development there was only a 60% turnout at the meeting. I am sure you are all as disappointed as we were at that figure for a decision on such a major issue for the club.

"The Board accepts that information-briefing road shows should have taken place prior to the 22nd February EGM. Members rightly felt that they were not in a fully informed readiness to vote. We now plan a number of such information-briefing forums."

The letter also adopted a conciliatory approach to the members, many of whom have made it clear that they are particularly unhappy about the lengthy lease that is on offer to St. Modwen.

"Your Board recognises that we can only move forward with the goodwill and support of our Members," continued the letter.

"We all want to do our best for the future of the Club, the British Grand Prix and the future health of the British motorsport industry, particularly the encouragement of young British drivers.

"It is extremely important that you attend and your voice is heard at these BRDC information forums, which are designed to lift the lid on any misconceptions, or fears you may have for the future of the Club including that of your membership and that of deserving future members."
