BMW to test new-look front wing on Friday

BMW Sauber will evaluate a new-look front wing in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix tomorrow, even though the design has not been tested on a car yet

The German squad are determined to keep pushing development of their F1.07 hard, despite their impressive start to the season that has seen them emerge as Ferrari and McLaren's closest challengers.

Those efforts have resulted in the team giving the green light to try out the new wing tomorrow, although no decision has been taken on whether it will be introduced for the race.

"We will have it on the car tomorrow and we will see how it works," said BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen. "We haven't had it on the track so far."

When asked whether the wing was very different, Theissen grinned and replied: "You will recognize it."

Theissen is adamant that BMW Sauber will continue to be as aggressive as possible with the aerodynamics of their car - after courting controversy last year with their 'Twin Towers' on the nose and a rear wing that some rivals think flexed too much.

"Maybe things will not be as spectacular and maybe they won't be as easy to observe, but we should have at least as much as last year," he said. "The team is stronger now and we are gaining experience. We have got much more manpower now so the output is higher than last year."

The area of wings looks set to be a major focus of the action tomorrow, with McLaren set to run their new bridge front wing that spans over the top of the nose.

Although there have been some suggestions that the McLaren wing could draw attention for flexing too much, Theissen says he is not concerned about the situation.

"I think if it really flexes it is so apparent then everybody would see it and it would be banned immediately," he said. "It is not the best place to put some flexibility into something."
