Berger unhappy with new Williams

BMW motorsport director Gerhard Berger has admitted that he is dissatisfied with the early performance of Williams' new FW24 challenger in testing

According to a report in AUTOSPORT's sister publication Autocar, Berger said that testing at Barcelona in Spain has failed to give them the necessary extra performance to push them ahead of their nearest target, McLaren-Mercedes.

"It is true that after the first tests the new car did not produce the lap times we were expecting," Berger told Autocar. "I always regard the speed of a new car on its first outing as a very important sign. And, even taking into account the need to make chassis set-up changes, we are not satisfied."

Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya has spoken positively about BMW's new engine for 2002, but Berger said it is the overall performance which counts.

"I don't like to separate the chassis from the power unit," he said. "We are talking about a whole package here, but it looks like McLaren are ahead of us."

Montoya was fastest in testing at Valencia yesterday (Monday), but neither McLaren or Ferrari were present.
