Berger: BMW should stick with Williams

BMW motorsport director Gerhard Berger is urging the German car giant to renew its contract with the Williams team and take their relationship beyond 2004, he has told this week's AUTOSPORT magazine

The former grand prix ace says the Munich marque should remain purely an engine supplier by signing a new deal with the British team for the 2005 season and beyond, rather than electing to take the en tire operation in-house and design its own chassis.

BMW's board is due to decide in weeks on its long-term F1 strategy, and is considering options including building its own car. In a recent interview on Austrian television, Berger appeared to hint that he favoured this option.

However, speaking to AUTOSPORT, Berger clarified his comments. "To build up our own car or a team would be very challenging, but that would not necessarily be the best solution for BMW," he said. "For BMW it looks at the moment that Williams is a very good partner and I personally think a continuation with Williams is the best way forward."
