Barca 2: Fisi pips Alonso

Giancarlo Fisichella topped the times in Formula 1 testing at Barcelona in Spain today (Wednesday), as Sauber, Jaguar and Renault joined Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer at the Circuit de Catalunya

Sauber's Fisichella lapped in 1m16.904, just a couple of hundredths faster than Renault's Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard conducted a suspension development programme during the morning, and then completed aerodynamic evaluations, as well as set-up work for the coming races, in the afternoon.

Jaguar's Mark Webber was third fastest, but failed to dip into the 1m16s bracket. He was a tenth clear of Badoer, who racked up 102 laps after suffering engine problems on Tuesday.

Fifth fastest Montagny spent the day tyre testing. He evaluated tyre compounds in the morning, and then constructions in the afternoon.

Renault's chief test engineer Christian Silk said: "Franck found some good developments on the tyre side, while Fernando's set-up work also yielded some useful lessons. On the engine side, we have been preparing for the transition to the new qualifying format ahead of Silverstone, and have experienced no difficulties at all."

Jaguar test driver Bjorn Wirdheim was at the foot of the timesheets, although he got through 87 laps of the Spanish GP venue.
