BAR sure of more podiums
Jenson Button's first Formula 1 podium finish at last weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix will be the first of many this season, according to the BAR team's technical director Geoff Willis
The team impressed with its pace in pre-season testing and that was borne out by Button's performance in Australia two weeks ago, when the Briton qualified fourth and finished sixth. In fact, the squad's disappointment at sixth was an indication of how much BAR's ambitions have grown for 2004.
As well as their faith in the new 006 car, team members have also been impressed by Button's approach to his new role as BAR team leader. Willis believes this combination will produce many more good results during the season.
"In the new-look BAR team, this [result] is very important," explained Willis. "It gives you confidence that you can do it. You might theoretically think you can do it but it gives you a big boost to actually do it.
"Jenson has been the bridesmaid for so long that to get on the podium is very strong for him. I think in the back of your mind, as soon as you have broken into that, then you know you can do it again.
"It was a very good drive from Jenson. He matures very quickly. He has a lot of experience. He is very smooth, calm, not easily ruffled. He and the engineers work very well together and he fits well with the team.
"He is stepping up and gets more confidence all the time. I have been very confident with Jenson from when David [Richards] and I talked about getting him in the car. I certainly wanted him in the car, and he is doing what we wanted."
