Ascanelli wants immediate change

Scuderia Toro Rosso's new technical director Giorgio Ascanelli is wasting no time in making changes at the team, in a bid to improve their form

Ascanelli was appointed to his new role earlier this week and, after meeting the team for the first time in Sepang yesterday, he revealed that he is already planning on doing things differently.

When asked by autosport.com when he expected to start making changes at the team, Ascanelli replied: "Today. It is what it is all about. The time to market in F1 is five days.

"The point is that there are things that you have to think about, and the other one is that you have to take responsibility for taking decisions.

"You cannot just sit here and stand around and think. There are already some things I have already decided to move."

Ascanelli believes that the only way Toro Rosso will make progress is if they recognise the areas where they are struggling.

"My father taught me two things," the Italian explained. "The first one was that to react to a problem you need to establish what the problem is. And the first way to fix a problem is to realise that you have one.

"There are things that I obviously don't like but I think they (the team) obviously don't like. And if there are the things that don't make us happy then there must be a reason.

"The crucial point is not just what we have to change, but also why. And the reason is not always immediate. I reserve my judgement for when I consider the facts."

Ascanelli is convinced that Toro Rosso have the tools necessary to be successful in F1, and is looking forward to working with team owner and close friend Gerhard Berger, whom he used to race engineer, and team principal Franz Tost.

"We all have to make this team work; it is not just the top two persons," added Ascanelli. "The management draw the lines but it is up to everybody to make it happen.

"I think we can do it; otherwise I would not be here."
