Antonio Pizzonia Q&A
Antonio Pizzonia has burst onto the scene this year after dominating the British Formula 3 championship and putting in impressive test performances for the Benetton Formula 1 team and also with Arrows. The young Brazilian tested for Tom Walkinshaw's team at Barcelona this week and completed just over a day's running on old-spec tyres and with an old Peugeot engine rather than the team's latest AMT-unit, but still managed to put in competitive times. Pizzonia has in fact become one of motorsport's hottest properties, but as yet has not announced any concrete plans for next year. With the majority of Formula 1 test berths filled and the 2001 Formula 3000 driver line-up starting to take shape, the 20-year-old could be running out of options. He's not worried
"Very good. The car quite felt quite good and the team did a great job to make me feel welcome and I liked the way the team worked. I think there is a lot of potential there and they should move up the grid next year. We tried lots of different things on the car, some of which worked quite well, so I'm happy."
"Well, they were different, but I don't really know how much I should say about that."
"The last time I drove a racing car was almost two months ago and I didn't think I would be driving again this year. The team phoned me last Thursday evening to ask if I wanted to do the test, so to be honest I was not really prepared. To not drive any kind of racing car for two months is a big gap and then to jump straight into a Formula 1 car, it's going to be tough. But the time I did wasn't too far off and I'm sure if I had driven another car before then I would have been quicker."
"I think it was good considering the problem we had with the tyres. Bridgestone would not let me use the 2001 tyres because I don't have a contract with them and they were worried about me going to test with a Michelin team afterwards. They said the new tyres were about two seconds quicker than the old ones and Pedro's [de la Rosa] time from Monday was only 2.1s quicker so I was pretty close."
"No, not really because we have had a lot of opportunities before, but I just thought that they were not the right ones for me so I didn't take them. It's not that I haven't got options for racing, it's just that I am trying to find the best opportunity for my career. I know I'm taking a risk but we still have a few things in the bag."
"It's nice, but it's difficult as well because if you have only one option then you can put all your effort into that, but sometimes you have so many different things to think about it can be difficult to make a decision."
"It doesn't really bother me. I am still very young and I think he's jumping quite a lot of steps and that is not part of my plan. I also heard that he is taking quite a big sponsor with him to Sauber and to be honest that can help anyone. I've never had that money available to get into a team. But I do think he's quick and I have raced against him in Formula Renault and I'm not saying he's not good. I think he's very good and he's got a lot of potential, but now he just has to prove that he is ready to do it."
"Not really because like I said I'm not planning to jump any steps and I think F3000 is still an important step for me. I know people say the car is not great, but I'm sure I would learn a lot and learn the tracks and be ready to do Formula 1 in 2002. But we have something in the bag outside of F3000, which will be a big surprise for everyone. We haven't signed anything yet, but it should be announced in January."
