Alonso won't push for victory on Sunday

World champion Fernando Alonso says he will not be going for victory at Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix

The Spanish Renault driver needs to score just one point to secure the title, and he made it clear on Thursday that his main priority was the drivers' championship, despite the French squad still within Ferrari's reach in the constructors' standings.

Alonso said on Friday that he will not be taking unnecessary risks.

"I think we approach the weekend with the same motivation, the same philosophy, and the same approach in terms of strategy for qualifying, for the race and for Fridays," said Alonso.

"Everything should be normal, we try to do a normal race but the main objective at the end of the race is to be in the points and not win."

Alonso added: "We need to finish the race, that is for sure, and we need to avoid any risk but at the same time I think we need to prepare for the race with an absolutely normal approach. Tomorrow we need to fight for pole position and try on Sunday to fight for the podium.

"And if with 10 laps or 20 laps to go and you are in a comfortable position then for sure you can drop your pace a little bit."

The Spaniard, however, reckons the team would make a mistake in changing their approach for the weekend.

"We need to do a normal strategy. If the ideal lap to stop in terms of strategy on the computer is lap M then we need to go for that lap. It would be crazy to change too many things this weekend.

"If you start in the front you start with your main rivals, so it is difficult to approach the first corner and if you start at the back then you are in the middle of the group so you have more risk as well, so the first corner is always risky.

"But I did the last 70 races in F1 with no problems in the first corner so I don't think there will be a problem this Sunday."
