Alonso Unfazed by Future Speculations
World Championship leader Fernando Alonso is untroubled by continued speculation linking his long-term future to Ferrari, claiming his only concern is winning the title with Renault over the next two years
The Spaniard recently confirmed a one-year contract extension with Renault, which ties him to the French manufacturer until the end of 2006. But that has not stopped rumours about a possible switch to Maranello the year after.
Speaking in Istanbul, Turkey, at the weekend, during the Renault Roadshow demonstration, Alonso told reporters that his future remains completely open. "I have a contract with Renault until the end of 2006 and I don't worry about whether Michael Schumacher will retire or not, or if Ferrari wants me or not.
"I am in a clear situation with Renault at the moment. I have confidence to win with Renault in these two years. It is no problem to be Michael's teammate but we are at very different ages and it would be difficult."
Despite Renault's strong start to the season, Alonso is still predicting a tough battle for World Championship honours because he believes no team has the kind of advantage enjoyed by Ferrari in 2004.
"Last year we saw Ferrari in a very dominant position because they had everything right," he explained. "They had the right car and the right tyre and the Championship didn't reflect the truth in terms of the performance of the other cars.
"We are seeing a more normal Formula one show with equal teams this year all, fighting for the title."
