All-American F1 team plan on ice
The boss of energy drinks firm Red Bull has not given up on his dream of creating an all-American Formula 1 team - but he has admitted that the plans are nowhere near coming to fruition, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine
Dietrich Mateschitz has long desired to own his own F1 squad, and has come close to linking up with a number of teams. He was interested in a link-up with Jordan last winter, but Mateschitz's overtures have so far been unsuccessful.
The closest Mateschitz came was in reaching an agreement with Arrows boss Tom Walkinshaw last May, but the deal collapsed following a court injunction by team shareholders.
Mateschitz has now claimed that until he convinces a current team to sell out to him, or makes a decision to go it alone and start a new team from scratch, he is happy to remain as a sponsor of Sauber, although he has made it clear that he would not stay with Sauber if he does form a team.
"To be associated with two different projects in F1 would make no sense," he said.
