Alesi decision on Hungary fitness due next week

Prost Grand Prix will know early next week if Jean Alesi is fit enough after his 200mph Hockenheim shunt to race in the Hungarian Grand Prix

Alesi was pitched into the barriers by the Sauber of Pedro Diniz under braking for the very fast Senna Chicane. The Prost spun at least six times during the accident and although the French-Sicilian suffered no broken bones, he vomited at the scene, such were the forces to which he was subjected.

Alesi has since complained of stomach pains and has admitted to having doubts over his fitness for the Hungaroring. A Prost spokeswoman said on Thursday: "He is complaining about some pain still and I think the repercussions of the accident are bigger than he first thought. We don't know at the moment if he will drive, but we are expecting a decision early next week."

Should Alesi be sidelined, Prost test driver Stephane Sarrazin is a likely stand-in. The 25-year-old, who was recently dropped by the MySAP.com Formula 3000 team, has one other GP start, as a a stand-in for Minardi driver Luca Badoer at the 1999 Brazilian race.
