Ricard 1: Pedro fastest
Pedro de la Rosa topped the times during the first day of testing on Paul Ricard's solution 1C lay-out - the longest of the French venue's several formats - as the teams began preparations for the Canadian Grand Prix
De la Rosa completed a mammoth 113 laps on the 5.8km track, his 1m32.460s lap time, over a tenth faster than Williams-BMW test driver Antonio Pizzonia.
Toyota's Ricardo Zonta was third fastest ahead of the second Williams, driven by the team's other tester Marc Gene. Olivier Panis was the only contracted race driver at the test, fifth quickest in his Toyota, ahead of Alexander Wurz in the other McLaren.
Anthony Davidson was seventh fastest but his programme was curtailed after 12 laps when he stopped out on the circuit in agony with a back problem. The BAR team reports however that there is no serious problem and the Englishman is expected to be back in action before Monaco.
Timo Glock rounded off the times for Jordan. Nick Heidfeld is expected to take over driving duties tomorrow and Giorgio Pantano Friday. It is unclear who will be driving on Thursday, but the rumoured test for Jos Verstappen is now reported to be unlikely to happen. At the moment.
