F1 United States GP Live Commentary and Updates – Race

Minute-by-minute updates for the 2023 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix

Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing RB19, Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes F1 W14, Charles Leclerc, Ferrari SF-23, Lando Norris, McLaren MCL60, the rest of the field on the opening lap

Max Verstappen controlled the US GP sprint race on Saturday, but takes on a trickier challenge in the grand prix as he starts from sixth place with Charles Leclerc on pole.

While the Red Bull driver remains favourite, having wrapped up the F1 world drivers’ title last time out in Qatar, his rivals will be looking to spring an upset at the Circuit of the Americas.

The US GP starts at 8pm BST.

The Aston pair, who also started from pitlane, are 17th (Alonso) and 19th (Stroll).
Norris is still sailing serenely at the front, with a 3.2s lead over Leclerc, who now has Hamilton for company directly behind him.
Magnussen is running 15th after his pitlane start, with team-mate Hulkenberg in 18th.
A lap later, Verstappen makes a late but decisive move to take fourth place from Sainz into Turn 12. Smart driving from the world champion.
No further investigation for Russell - he'll be relieved after yesterday's penalty.
Hamilton gets third from Sainz, using DRS on the back straight, and dives up the inside into Turn 12. Behind them Verstappen had a great view of that move.
Ocon loses two more places - is this because of his sidepod damage?
At the start of lap four Hamilton is sizing up a move on Sainz for third.
Gasly makes it past Ocon for ninth, with Tsunoda claiming 10th from the Frenchman.
Norris is flying at the front as he puts another seven-tenths of a second into his lead. Verstappen, in fifth, is taking a steady approach to his expected charge up the order after the first lap.
Russell makes it past Ocon into Turn 11, with Perez following him through to slot into eighth.
Russell has been noted for leaving the track and gaining an advantage - again!
Ocon reports sidepod damage to Alpine - he made contact with Piastri at Turn 2.
Ocon put up a staunch defence against Russell there, despite the Mercedes closing into Turn 13.
Norris has a 1.7s lead at the end of lap one! Impressive! Leclerc is still keeping an eye on Sainz behind him, with Hamilton tracking both of them in fourth.
Tsunoda passes Zhou for 11th, as AlphaTauri team-mate Daniel Ricciardo runs 13th on his grand prix return from injury
On the opening lap at Turn 12 Sainz has a look at overtaking team-mate Leclerc for second but has to back out of it. Further back Piastri attacks Verstappen but gets shown the long way around.
Norris makes a super start and goes into the lead at Turn 1! Verstappen is up to fifth and gets a clean start.
Leclerc leads the pack back to the starting grid and we are ready for the start...
Here we go - Leclerc leads away the formation lap. Everyone gets going smoothly, minus the four pitlane starters.
Not much variance but, credit to Pirelli, they nailed their predictions. So expect the two hard tyre starters to try to go bold and target a one-stop... which for Hulkenberg and Haas might be a tall order.
Starting tyres klaxon: Hulkenberg and Stroll are on hards, everyone else is on mediums.
With 10 minutes to go here's the weather check: It is bright and sunny once again at COTA, but it is not as hot as earlier in the weekend. The temperature is 29.2C with the track at a fraction below 40C.
It is a stripped back and relaxed rendition of the US national anthem performed by Dylan Gossett with the EMS Honours Guards. Very chilled.
It is time for the national anthem and excuse us if you've heard this one before. Back in Miami in May, to be precise.
Let's talk race strategy: Pirelli is predicting a two-stopper for the majority of the drivers today and most will likely start on mediums before switching to hards in the middle stint and then a final blast on whatever rubber they prefer.
Stroll is going to be investigated after the race for not entering pitlane following his reconnaissance laps. The FIA has upped its maximum fine to €1m from this weekend - it won't be that kind of cash but the penalty will probably be a monetary one.
The US GP sprint race was a relatively tame affair on Saturday, but could things get a bit spicy for the start today? Verstappen will be the one to watch blasting from sixth.
Alonso has been pitlane'd as he has reverted to Aston Martin's old car specification having lost faith, for today, in the upgrade package the team delivered at this race. Full story here: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/alonso-back-to-old-spec-aston-martin-for-pitlane-start-in-f1-us-gp/10536363/

Anyway, the US GP will have 16 starters on the grid and four from pitlane - the most blasting off from the pitlane since the 2003 Brazilian GP, we're reliably informed.

The pitlane is closed and the pair of Haas and Aston Martin drivers are where they are meant to be. No update yet on what Stroll did, but it could be him not going through pitlane during the reconnaissance laps.
It is all going on now, as Perez says his drinks system is leaking and it has soaked his balaclava so he needs a new one on the grid.
Meanwhile Stroll has been noted by race control for not entering pitlane... which is a new one. You'd think he'd know how the laps to the grid work by now.
Russell has detected an issue with his car on the way to the grid: "I've lost the button on the back of the brake magic." His team confirm they will try to fix it on the grid.
Hello one and all! Here we go then for the United State GP main event - Sunday's 56-lap grand prix. The cars are on the way from the pitlane to the grid.
