Perez drops a 1m19.468s, so he's very much catching. Gap now at 6s, with 21 to go.
"24 laps remaining, we're gonna catch him," Bird tells Perez. Gap as of lap 48 is 7s.
Bottas begins his recovery drive part II by overtaking Ocon at Turn 1 to move up to 13th place, but there are no prizes for guessing who is next up ahead of him.
"Your tyre surface condition looks very good," Gianpiero Lambiase tells Max Verstappen, with the earnestness of a proud parent. Photos of his tyres will be reserved for the Red Bull fridge.
And just like that, Norris pits. The McLaren driver says goodbye to those mediums and takes on fresh hards and returns to the action in 10th place, eight seconds behind Alonso.
"Can you keep an eye on my left front tyre compared to other people," Verstappen asks, perhaps offering a slight modicum of concern about it.

Norris must be massaging his medium tyres as he starts lap 45 still yet to pit in this race. The McLaren driver is up to seventh and going very well.

Sainz finally pits from fourth, taking on hard tyres and rejoins in sixth, behind Leclerc. It's pretty much as you were in the top six.
It really is a nightmare afternoon for Bottas, as he pits for a second stop but his left-front tyre refuses to come off meaning it is a very slow stop. The Finn finally gets going again with fresh mediums but is down in 15th place.
It's a 1m19.659s for Perez, who provisionally wrests the fastest lap point away from Hamilton.
"Let me know where they're quicker," Hamilton asks, as he wants to get a move on.
Alonso pits, but it is a slow stop, leaving him to drop to 10th and back behind Vettel and Raikkonen.
Perez finally pits from the lead, with Red Bull bolting on the hard tyre.
Ocon dives by Russell to take 14th place with a smart move at Turn 4.
Bottas is free! McLaren opt to pit Ricciardo at the end of lap 39 which releases Bottas into 11th place.
Verstappen's opened the gap back open to Hamilton behind, and now stands at 9s as of the end of lap 39.
Back to the Ricciardo vs Bottas battle and it is as you were. Once again Bottas has a look at a move at Turn 1 but backs out. It is turning into an afternoon to forget for the Finn.
"This pace is good," Perez is told, as he's expressed his happiness with the tyres.
Stroll has come in for a second stop, and it was a pretty slow one at 6.7s, to put him out in 17th place. Not ideal.
Hamilton has cut the arrears to Verstappen, and now sits 7s behind his title rival.
"Keep on pushing Checo," comes the call, as the home hero leads a lap of the Mexican GP. He's told to run to Plan A plus 5.
Vettel pits a lap later and comes out ahead of Raikkonen by 2.5s. So no, to answer that earlier question.
Raikkonen pits to slot into 10th place. Can he undercut Vettel to take a net seventh place?
Verstappen now pits at the end of lap 33, collecting the hard tyre.
Leclerc, on those fresh hard tyres, nips by Alonso at Turn 1 to move up to eighth place. Alonso is yet to stop so that was a bit of a mismatch.
Gasly stops from fourth, hoping to return to the track ahead of Leclerc - and duly does so.
Hamilton posts a 1m19.953s, so he might be able to overturn the arrears. He now has a clear track, as the traffic ahead has gone.
Leclerc pits, taking on the hard tyres. Swift stop for Ferrari.
"Box this lap," Leclerc is told, so that lets Hamilton off the hook a little.
Hamilton pits, so the target-plus-six was off the menu. Hard tyres for Hamilton, but he comes out behind Leclerc - so that's going to swing massively in Perez's favour.
The timing screen states Vettel went off track at Turn 12 but continued. He is still running in seventh place and looks to be OK.
Perez is getting closer to Hamilton, getting within that 2s window of the Mercedes driver. Music, I'm sure, to Red Bull's ears.
"We're looking at target plus six," Hamilton is told, which should cement a one-stopper.
Bottas keeps having a look at a pass on Ricciardo at Turn 1 and Turn 5 but each lap he backs out of it.
"Checo, let's close up," Perez is told, still on the cusp of breaking into the 2s gap.
Bottas is still stuck behind Ricciardo on lap 26. He shows his front wing on the inside of Ricciardo at Turn 5 but thinks better of it and backs out to stay P12.
"Stay on Hamilton, close this gap up," Hugh Bird tells Perez. Game still on in the stakes for P2.
"These guys are obviously too fast for us," Hamilton says. "Copy, just keep building the gap to Perez," says Pete Bonnington over the intercom.
A small lull in the pitstop action after the earlier flurry. Giovinazzi's early stop looks like it will backfire as Vettel, who he was ahead, is lapping a few tenths a lap faster and if he pitted now he would come out in front.
Gasly sits in fourth, 10.5s off Perez, with Leclerc and Sainz a further few seconds back in fifth and sixth.
