F1 Dutch GP Live Commentary and Updates - Race

Minute-by-minute updates for the 2024 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing RB20

Lando Norris starts on pole for McLaren ahead of home favourite Max Verstappen who joins him on the front row for Red Bull.

Alex Albon was disqualified from qualifying after his Williams car failed scrutineering for a technical infringement on the floor. The Anglo-Thai driver will start from the back of the grid.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton was given a three-place grid penalty for blocking Sergio Perez during qualifying – but only drops two spots due to Albon’s disqualification – and he will start from 14th.

Speaking of Hamilton, he finally passes Hulkenberg for P11 and he's 13s off the lead.

Up to eighth for Sainz as he passes Alonso around the outside of Turn 1. It's really the only passing point on the lap, aside from a very bold lunge at Turn 11, as Hamilton showcased earlier.

A confusing exchange between Norris and his race engineer Will Joseph, who asks his driver who he thinks he is racing. Norris says whoever the car is ahead. Translating that, McLaren has asked Norris if he has the pace to fight Red Bull or needs to defend from Russell behind too.

Verstappen is warned over team radio about his rear-left tyre sliding, with his Red Bull with a full tank of fuel at this point in the race.

Oh no, a trip into the gravel for Magnussen at Turn 1 as he locks up. Just as we were talking up his battle with Zhou too!

At the very back of the field, there's a tasty battle between Zhou and Magnussen, with the pair switching places lap to lap. It won't get any air time, but it's a fascinating battle.

Norris takes a tenth out of Verstappen's lead on lap four but he is still out of DRS range. It won't be long before he must think about looking after his tyres in the dirty air of the Red Bull ahead.

Russell is defending from Piastri in the fight for third with the gap under half a second. That battle is keeping Leclerc and Perez connected to the DRS train.

Verstappen is flying in the lead, setting the fastest lap of anyone on the second lap, and is now 1.3s clear of Norris to move out of DRS range.

Hamilton is a man on a mission as he dives to the inside of Ricciardo at Turn 11. On soft tyres, he needs to make quick progress and will equally be very keen to see an early safety car.

DRS is enabled on the second lap but Verstappen is almost out of range of Norris with the gap at 0.9s. Further back Perez has dropped one place behind Leclerc into sixth.

A positive start for Sainz as well as he climbs past Stroll into ninth, as Gasly defends at Turn 1 from Alonso.

So, Norris fails to lead the opening lap of a race he started on pole once again. A very poor first lap for McLaren.

In the lower reaches, Hamilton has made early gains up to 13th while Gasly has flown up the order to seventh!

Norris makes an awful start and Verstappen takes the lead before he even reaches Turn 1! Piastri was also slow away and he is behind Russell in fourth.

No early jitters from the F1 grid on the formation lap, as Norris crawls towards his pole position grid slot for the start. Here we go...

So, the entire top 10 start on new medium tyres. An even fight at the front for the first lap.

Starting tyres: So much for those soft tyre predictions... the majority of the drivers start on mediums apart from Tsunoda, Hamilton and Bottas who all start on softs, and then Magnussen starts on hards.

The drivers are getting suited up and into their cars with 10 minutes to go until lights out. Time for that quick loo break before we get serious.

Anthem time! After all that hyping up of the crowd, a very sedate rendition of a tune we all know very well thanks to Verstappen's wins. 6/10, very peaceful.

At the front of the grid, it is Norris vs Verstappen once again. The Red Bull driver makes his 200th grand prix start today and he has 99% of the crowd backing him at his home race, just to put more pressure on the McLaren driver who hasn't led the opening lap when starting on pole in his F1 career.

Not to dismiss the atmosphere being whipped up, but there is just a lot of noise coming from the music acts at the front of the grid. If it is your thing, I'm sure you are loving it. The pitlane is closed and everyone is in position, enjoying the full force of the 'fun'.

After all that, here's the Dutch GP starting grid in full:

1. Norris 2. Verstappen 3. Piastri 4. Russell 5. Perez 6. Leclerc 7. Alonso 8. Stroll 9. Gasly 10. Sainz 11. Tsunoda 12. Hulkenberg 13. Ricciardo 14. Hamilton 15. Ocon 16. Bottas 17. Zhou 18. Sargeant 19. Albon Pitlane. Magnussen

And finally to Mercedes, as Hamilton was given a three-place penalty for blocking Perez during the first stage of qualifying. But due to Albon's situation he only drops back two spots to start 14th.

But, despite one car not taking part in qualifying and the other disqualified from it, neither Williams will start from the very back (sort of). That's because Magnussen will start from the pitlane after needing engine component changes, which had put him to the back, and then Haas made set-up changes to get the full fat penalty.

Starting with Williams: It was an eventful day for the British squad, starting with Sargeant's fiery FP3 crash that put him out of qualifying, followed by Albon's impressive Q3 charge to eighth on the grid. That was until he was kicked out of qualifying for running a car floor that didn't pass FIA scrutineering, so Albon joins his team-mate towards the back of the grid. Here's the full story.
