So, as a result, Grosjean's in P5. Haas electing not to pit this time. He's the only man on medium tyres.
Kvyat is already out of his AlphaTauri and walking away which is great to see. TV replays show the Russian driver suffered a tyre puncture going through Maggots which left him a passenger when he hit the wall.
Hamilton pits, as Mercedes double-stack. Verstappen pits, as does Leclerc, et al.
Oh no! Kvyat, having just got ahead of Giovinazzi, has crashed heavily. Safety Car!
Kvyat gets by Giovinazzi to move up to P12 and close up behind team-mate Gasly.
Fastest lap for Bottas to hit back, grabbing a 1m30.518s to close the gap.
"The field is quite compressed, so plan A, target lap", Sainz is told. One stop plan, it seems.
Despite lots of chopping and changing of positions in the early laps, Vettel is somewhat stuck not going forwards or backwards in 10th place. It was always going to be a tricky race for the Ferrari driver, but few would have predicted Gasly in the AlphaTauri to comfortably keep pace just behind him.
Bottas is clinging onto Hamilton's coat-tails, he's 1.7s behind Hamilton at the close of lap 10, with Verstappen nearly 4s further back.
Both Mercedes are comfortably setting high 1m30s times. Verstappen's in the 1m31s, Leclerc and Sainz in the 1m32s, everyone else in the 1m33s bar Albon - who's also in the 1m32s.
At the end of the first lap after the safety car period Albon pits from 12th to switch to the hard tyres. It might have been a necessary stop if his tyres were potentially damaged after his hit with Magnussen.
At the end of lap 7, Hamilton's already got 1.4s on Bottas, and Verstappen's an extra 2s behind them.
Stroll defending hard from Ocon to keep hold of eighth place. The French driver is all over the back of the Racing Point but he defends boldly.
Sainz is having a good crack at future team-mate Leclerc, but he's got Ricciardo for company too.
And we're back at full pelt! Hamilton's bolted, with Bottas and Verstappen having been dropped too.
Nobody has taken a massive strategy gamble by pitting during this early safety car period, with all drivers expected to stick to a one-stop strategy.
Bottom 10: 11. Gasly, 12. Albon, 13. Giovinazzi, 14. Kvyat, 15. Grosjean, 16. Raikkonen, 17. Russell, 18. Latifi, DNF: Magnussen, DNS: Hulkenberg
As they clear Magnussen's car, let's do a quick order. Top 10 is: 1. Hamilton, 2. Bottas, 3. Verstappen, 4. Leclerc, 5. Sainz, 6. Ricciardo, 7. Norris, 8. Stroll, 9. Ocon, 10. Vettel.
“I don’t know where he expected me to go to be honest,” is Albon's assessment of his clash with Magnussen over his team radio
Albon is able to continue in 12th place as his Red Bull team assess his car damage from the pitwall.
A start replay, then - Leclerc briefly got ahead of Verstappen for third, but the Dutchman managed to keep the right line and snatched the place back with the switchback into Loop.
A safety car appearance is a frequent feature of a British Grand Prix, and this is no exception. Hulkenberg and Magnussen out already, then.
Magnussen, on the outside of Albon, gets clattered at the apex of the corner and it sends the Danish driver into the gravel, with his Haas car losing the front left wheel.
Albon and Magnussen clash at the final corner of the first lap and that puts the Haas driver out of the race.
Further back Stroll gets a poor getaway and drops to P8 behind Ricciardo and Sainz, with the McLaren driver up to P5 at the start.
The British Grand Prix is go! Hamilton holds the outside line from Bottas to keep hold of the lead, as Verstappen hangs onto third from Leclerc!
Anyway, the formation lap's coming to an end and the drivers assume grid slots.
Hulkenberg's made it to the pitlane - alas, he's not in the car sadly.
"I don't know about you guys, but it feels a bit more relaxing this time" Verstappen deadpans, having had a more stressful time of it in Hungary...
So, plenty of variation on tyres. Norris, Sainz, Ricciardo, Ocon and Vettel begin on softs. Everyone else on mediums.
Less-than-five minute klaxon! Or is that fewer than five? Grammar pedants, have at it.
A few penalties after qualifying, then. Kvyat gets a grid drop having taken an extra gearbox before this round and starts P19, while Russell was bumped down to P20 after failing to slow for yellows in quali.
