F1 Brazilian GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP1

Minute-by-minute updates for FP1 for the 2024 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari SF-23, Carlos Sainz, Ferrari SF-23

The Americas Formula 1 triple-header concludes with a sprint weekend at the Brazilian Grand Prix as Lando Norris aims to further slash Max Verstappen's championship lead.

Carlos Sainz secured Ferrari's second straight victory with a dominating performance in Mexico last weekend as the Scuderia jumped Red Bull in the constructors' standings, but the headlines were grabbed by Verstappen, Norris and racing guidelines once again after the Dutchman was hit with 20-seconds worth of penalties.

Who will come out on top at Interlagos? The first clues will be provided in FP1, which gets under way at 2:30pm GMT.

Leclerc had set the fastest first-sector but had to abort his lap, as Verstappen goes fastest overall with a 1m11.712s. Russell is within a tenth of that.

What will happen here is that drivers will box every few laps for flap adjustments to try and find improvements. Any major set-up changes at this point would be a disaster in terms of track time.

That's proven by Alonso going third in the Aston Martin while, at the same time, Colapinto gets out of shape at the exit of Mergulho. The Williams driver somehow keeps it pointing the right way over the kerbs.

Hamilton's latest lap is good enough to go fourth.

This surface will keep improving across the session and even sprint quali later.

Back on track for now, Perez has just gone fastest with a 1:32.099s, 0.177 faster than Russell, who has jumped to second.

Norris is third, Leclerc fourth and Verstappen fifth.

The RBs are out on a set of softs early on - the only team to have done so.

Verstappen is set to run a new ICE and will be taking a five-place grid penalty for Sunday's race.

Leclerc improves on his second lap but only to sixth as Gasly again bumps and grinds across the track surface. It is certainly a bumpy surface.

Albon: "I've lost a headrest pin."

He has returned to the Williams garage to get that sorted.

Piastri's benchmark early on is a 1m13.478s and he is yet to be beaten by 10 other drivers who have set a time - Gasly now second after improving on his second lap.

Perez is third, Russell fourth and Hamilton fifth.

The track is full of cars in the early stages and lap times are being set thick and fast on one of the shortest layouts of the season.

Piastri leads Perez early on as drivers prepare for sprint quali on medium tyres.

Gasly was one of the first to hit the track and the new surface looked very, very bumpy on the run to Descida do lago.

No rain set for this session at least as the sun beats down on the new, darker asphalt.

But the weather could change tomorrow and Sunday, which could provide even more of a headache for the engineers and mechanics.

Ferrari enters the weekend hoping to sew up a hat-trick of race wins from the Americas triple-header.

This may not be a track that suits the team as much, but the momentum is truly with the Scuderia.

This circuit has really made itself the 'home' of the sprint, really showing off the positives of the format on each occasion since it was introduced in 2021.

But now it's time to focus on this weekend's action with teams thrust into a crucial hour of practice.

Any issues remaining with set-up after this will be stuck on cars until at least the end of the sprint.

Leaving Mexico last weekend, Max Verstappen's racing antics were the talking point.

He has been on the defensive though, suggesting he "doesn't have the right passport" for F1.
