Hamilton gets his time down to a 1m08.733s, further raising the bar at the front.
Sainz, meanwhile, assumes second place as Ferrari bolted on fresh softs for both cars.
Leclerc now leaps up to second but gets his time scrubbed off for track limits, as Alonso now goes seventh.
Ocon jumps up to P7, trying to claim a little slipstream off the pitting Verstappen. His old rival Gasly goes up to third, followed by Tsunoda who goes fourth.
Bottas goes up to P3, 0.05s off Verstappen in P2 - who can't improve second time around.
Stopwatch
Hamilton now goes top, with a 1m08.824s to stamp his foot on the session.
Ricciardo went up to fourth, with Stroll also nudging ahead of Gasly.
Stopwatch
Verstappen indeed stabs home a 1m09.329s, as Norris went second to split the two Red Bulls in the opening runs.
Gasly's lap was a full 0.4s faster than Sainz's, although we should get well into the 1m09s shortly.
Stopwatch
Gasly now does a 1m10.062s to go top for now.
Stopwatch
Leclerc kicks us off with a 1m10.780s, but Sainz goes a shade faster.
Russell came back in after that first lap, so perhaps he'd done the same on scrubbed tyres and decided to go for a fresh set. Let's see what the situation is down at Williams.
Scrubbed sets for the Ferraris, as they crack on with an exploratory lap at this early stage to get a banker in.
Russell is the first man on the track, joined by the Ferraris, Gasly and Mazepin.
Green flag
Here we go then, qualifying is now underway.
Five minutes until Q1 begins! Let's tentatively prepare ourselves to rumble...
There's a risk of rain of 40% in this session; we had a few spits and spots during practice, but it didn't really affect anything. Let's see if any inclement weather rains on anybody's parade.
A reminder of what happened in FP1: Hamilton was top by 0.3s over Verstappen, with Perez and Bottas just a smidgen off that. Gasly was fifth, ahead of the Ferraris.
Lots of work going on with Sergio Perez's car - the engine cover's on and they're sticking on the 'aero tape', so he might be okay.
Breaking news
Hamilton's grid penalty won't come into effect in tomorrow's sprint - that'll be saved for Sunday's race.
We're also not bound by starting tyres this weekend, such is the nature of the sprint weekend, so expect everyone to go hell for leather on the fastest tyres available.
We're back! Qualifying for tomorrow's Sao Paulo GP sprint race will be upon us in just over 20 minutes' time.
That'll be all from me for now, but we'll be back a little before 19:00 UK time for qualifying. See you then!
If you missed anything from FP1, here's the full report from Alex Kalinauckas: https://t.co/o2soCV09Xc?amp=1
AlphaTauri topped the pile in terms of mileage, with Tsunoda clocking 33 laps on his first visit to Interlagos and Gasly 32.

Both Alfa Romeos were ahead of the fastest McLaren, with Raikkonen P13 ahead of Giovinazzi - who is still waiting to discover his F1 fate. Norris languishes in P15, ahead of Schumacher, Latifi, Russell, Ricciardo and Mazepin.
Stroll and Vettel took P10 and P12 for Aston Martin, either side of Tsunoda in the second AlphaTauri who was almost half a second down on team-mate Gasly.
However the team likely to be happiest of the midfield is Alpine, with Ocon P8 and Alonso P9 on the medium tyre - clearly, it has some pace in its back pocket which could prove handy come qualifying later on.
Ferrari took sixth and seventh quickest times, with Sainz ahead of Leclerc - once again the Scuderia well clear of third place rivals in the constructors' championship McLaren, with Norris P15 and Ricciardo P19.
Right at the end, Gasly moves up to P5 for AlphaTauri on the soft, the only non-Merc/Red Bull to broach the 1m09s bracket with an 09.889s.
With the fastest first and third sectors, Hamilton tops the pile ahead of Verstappen (fastest middle sector) by 0.36s with Perez third and Bottas fourth.
Checkered flag
There's the chequered flag to denote the end of a frenetic FP1 session.
Gasly is currently down in P15 and being outpaced by team-mate Tsunoda, who has just popped up into P10. Bottas meanwhile has a strange moment at Turn 5 and goes off the track.
There was a bit of fun and games across the line a minute ago involving Gasly (soft) and Alonso (hard) - the double world champion coming perilously close to striking the AlphaTauri before pulling out to run side-by-side down the pit straight. Gasly doesn't like that, and the two run slowly through Turn 1, the Frenchman clearly wanting to make a point.
Hamilton now improves further, with a 1m09.050s to stretch his margin over Verstappen to 0.367s.
Verstappen's last two laps were in the 1m14s bracket - which suggests he's got a fair bit of fuel in the car, perhaps with a view to trying the soft in the sprint?
"It was a huge hit," says Leclerc as he's informed by Ferrari over the radio that the team is checking the condition of his car.
Tellingly, both Ferraris only just sneak ahead of Ocon with softs despite the Alpine running on mediums - that suggests there's more to come yet from the French cars, with Alonso in eighth also still yet to run the soft.
Sainz has gone purple in sector one on softs and now moves up to fifth on a 1m10.124s, Leclerc slotting in behind him on a 1m10.142s with another ragged moment at Turn 4. "Did I brake something?" he asks over the radio.
