F1 Abu Dhabi GP Live Commentary and Updates – Qualifying

Minute-by-minute updates for qualifying for the 2024 Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes F1 W15

The F1 season reaches a climax in Abu Dhabi with McLaren and Ferrari set to battle it out for glory on the constructors' championship.

Off-track, a war of words between Max Verstappen and George Russell has stolen the spotlight from drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, who are either racing with teams for the last time or are making potentially their final appearance in the category.

Charles Leclerc topped first practice but picked up a 10-place grid penalty for a battery change, as Lando Norris headed a McLaren 1-2 in FP2 and Oscar Piastri repeated the McLaren dominance in FP3.

Qualifying starts at 2:00pm GMT.

That means Albon and Colapinto will make it an all-Williams back row when their penalties are applied.

Out in Q1: 16. Albon, 17. Zhou, 18. Hamilton, 19. Colapinto, 20. Doohan.

The replays reveal what happened: Magnussen, trying to get out of the way of Hamilton, goes off track and clips a bollard which the Mercedes driver picks up and it gets stuck under his car.

"Messed that up big time guys. ****," Hamilton says over team radio. He also has a bollard wedged under his car, which then comes free from his car at Turn 6.

Hamilton is out in Q1! He doesn't improve and will start his final Mercedes race in 18th place at best.

Colapinto is out and so is Zhou, but the biggest name in danger is Hamilton down in 18th.

Ah, messy! Lawson swings around the final corner but has to weave through traffic before getting to the finish line. He goes up to 12th.

Bottas goes fastest of anyone! Wow! A 1m23.481s means anyone could be in danger here.

Albon and Colapinto have shot up to 11th and 13th respectively in their attempts to make it into Q2. Everyone else is on the track going all out now.

Interesting, Perez gets his lap reinstated from earlier and that shoots him back up to third place. The replays were mighty close but it did look like there was no clear evidence that he was fully off of the track.

Just the Williams pair on the track at the moment, as the rest prepare for their final Q1 runs. All or nothing time already.

We have lap times from all those who didn't pick up track limit offences, so in the Q1 drop zone with seven minutes to go is Doohan, Lawson, Albon, Perez and Colapinto.

Piastri slots into fourth and Norris goes fifth - they are both behind Magnussen who grabbed third. Impressive pace at Haas today.

Sainz leads the times now from Verstappen, Leclerc and Tsunoda. Coming up are the McLarens.

Colapinto picks up the same lap time deletion as Perez down at Turn 1 so that is his opening effort scratched out.

Perez goes fastest with a 1m23.559s... but then immediately loses it for track limits at Turn 1. Not a good start for the Mexican.

Stroll sets the early marker of a 1m24.366s. Everyone else is on a preparation lap with 12 minutes to go in Q1.

Both Mercedes drivers have also opted for the one scrub lap on their hard tyres. Pretty unusual behaviour for Q1, but with a mix of FP1 runners in the first session plus the vital FP2 running needed in the only session in representative conditions, perhaps this was the best available time to do it. Anyway, all others are coming out on crisp and fresh soft tyres.

Stroll is on the softs, as expected, while Alonso is on the hards for what is expected to be just a scrub lap for that set of tyres. Qualifying on the hard tyres would be bold, even for Alonso.

Stroll is the first to venture out, while there is still work going to Gasly's Alpine in the pits. Tight timings.

Here we go! Q1 is under way for the final time in 2024. I know, it is emotional.

While it is a first ever F1 qualifying for Doohan who makes his grand prix debut this weekend at Alpine, coming in early for Ocon who has been shuffled out ahead of his move to Haas.

Both Williams drivers also come into this session with five-place grid drops each, so Albon and Colapinto are also on the backfoot in their respective fights.

Pole is so, so important in Abu Dhabi - the last nine winners have all come from pole position - so it really is all to play for today. But one driver who won't really be in that fight is Leclerc, who has a 10-place grid penalty to serve for a battery change earlier in the weekend.

The sun has set on the Yas Marina track and the temperature is slowly dipping. McLaren has looked strong in practice and with its fight with Ferrari for the world constructors' crown the main focus for the rest of the weekend, this is a crucial session in that tussle.
