But Vettel's effort is a 1m30.124s. Leclerc is also well down on his best, but a quarter of a second faster than his team-mate on that run.
After a cooldown lap, both Vettel and Leclerc have gone for a second fast lap.
The Ferraris are the only cars to have decided to head out that early for qualifying runs - everyone else is back in the pits.
Vettel gets a great exit from the final corner and skips the 1m29s bracket altogether, setting a new fastest time of 1m28.942s. Leclerc had a bit of a (comparatively) duff middle sector and is 0.141s down on his team-mate.

Vettel is a cool 0.569s up on Bottas through the first sector, and Leclerc is a further seven hundredths up on that.
Fasten your seatbelts. Both Ferraris are out on track on soft tyres - will we see a repeat of the team's FP1 advantage on these qualifying simulation runs?
Remember Hulkenberg's and Giovinazzi's tiff on track in FP1? The stewards have just announced no further action will be taken.
Hamilton puts in a new overall best in the first sector and a personal best in sector two, but doesn't improve in the final sector and as a result only moves up to third.
Early order: 1 Bottas; 2 Leclerc +0.079s; 3 Verstappen +0.171s; 4 Hamilton +0.405s; 5 Vettel +0.485s; 6 Gasly +0.516s; 7 Sainz +0.650s; 8 Magnussen +0.666s; 9 Hulkenberg +0.737s; 10 Norris +0.826s.
Sainz shoots immediately up to the head of the 'Class B' order in seventh with his first representative effort despite appearing to take the final corner slightly early.
Raikkonen is currently at the bottom end of the top 10, but within a second of Bottas's table-topping lap for now.
Bottas leaps to the head of the order now on a 1m30.124s, which puts him 0.079s clear of Leclerc's Ferrari.
Verstappen jumps up to second on a 1m30.295s, a lap that includes the fastest second sector of all.
Verstappen is out having his first go at a timed lap in the second of the Red Bulls. Hamilton and Bottas are also out on track for Mercedes.
Behind the Ferraris, Gasly pops straight up into third ahead of Magnussen, who has just reported his dashboard lights look very bright.
Leclerc then goes immediately faster than that with a 1m30.203s - which is already faster than the benchmark time he posted in FP1 earlier today.
Vettel immediately goes faster than Ricciardo at the top of the times, posting a 1m30.610s.
Raikkonen has been for a quick, harmless spin on the medium tyres at Turn 2, not long after exiting the pits.
Ricciardo gets a first time on the board in the Renault - it's a 1m32.932s.
It's all kicking off now, as a flurry of pitlane exits takes the number of cars out on track into the teens.
Ricciardo is out on the hard compound tyre, as Vettel heads out on mediums in his Ferrari.
Hooray! Ricciardo breaks the silence by heading out on track in the Renault.
No immediate rush to get out on track with four minutes gone. Nobody's headed out yet, and there's roughly a 50-50 split between drivers in their cars and those strutting around their garages from those we've seen on screen.
Green light at the end of the pitlane - FP2 is underway.
Track temperatures now are down to around 31C - that's some 18C cooler than at the start of FP1.
The sun has set and the floodlights are on at the Sakhir circuit, meaning the session coming up will be far more indicative of the conditions teams are likely to experience come Sunday evening's race.
Good afternoon, and welcome back to live coverage of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend. FP2 is up next in around 10 minutes' time.
