Lap 7: Schumacher, Massa, Vettel and Raikkonen run nose-to-tail, pulling slightly clear of Maldonado and Hamilton.
Lap 7: Rosberg chasing Button from 14th place, ahead of Vergne 15th and Ricciardo 16th. Then a gap to Kovalainen, Glock and de la Rosa.
Lap 6: Hamilton complains he "has no pace" with hard tyres on his McLaren at the moment.
Lap 6: Alonso is setting a steady pace for the moment on his hard rubber, but has edged a gap over Webber in the last couple of laps.
Lap 6: Grosjean is 22nd after that front wing change. He sets fastest lap of the race with 1m39.216s.
Lap 5: Hamilton remains eighth but has closed on Valencia rival Maldonado over the last couple of tours.
Lap 5: Di Resta has retired from the race and he has climbed out of the car. Replays showed that he came into contact with Grosjean on the opening lap.
Lap 5: Schumacher is told he may have DRS problems, but Massa behind also could be struggling to get the wing flap open.
Lap 5: Behind Perez, Senna is 10th with Hulkenberg 11th, Kobayashi 12th and Button now on the tail of the Sauber driver in 13th.
Lap 4: Replays of the start show just how close it was to a crash as Alonso and Webber swapped sides off the line.
Lap 4: Massa on the defensive now, just holding off Vettel into the Vale/Club complex to end the third lap.
Lap 4: Perez in ninth sets fastest lap as he chases after Hamilton's McLaren.
Lap 4: That slows Massa on to the Hangar straight, with Vettel now looking for a way past the Ferrari.
Lap 4: No let up in the action as Grosjean rejoins the race towards the back. Di Resta is back into the pits again.
Lap 3: Massa is racy this afternoon, looking for a move on his former team-mate Schumacher into Copse.
Lap 3: Grosjean comes into the pits and will need a front wing change after a scrap with Button and Kobayashi on the opening lap.
Lap 3: Vettel sets the fastest lap on the second tour, running just behind Massa as the DRS becomes available.
Lap 3: Di Resta made it back to the pits. It is a lengthy stop but the Scot is back underway at the rear of the field.
Lap 2: Hamilton is eighth with Senna ninth, Perez 10th, Hulkenberg 11th, Grosjean 12th and Button up five places to 13th.
Lap 2: Meanwhile, Alonso leads half way around the second tour with Webber still right on his tail.
Lap 2: Hamilton remains eighth in his McLaren, with the battle raging behind them.
Lap 2: Raikkonen has fallen to seventh, behind Maldonado, after possibly suffering damage in the battle with Vettel.
Lap 2: The field is tremendously spread out on this first lap. Vettel is fifth with Maldonado up to a sensational sixth, ahead of Raikkonen.
Lap 1: Webber is right on the gearbox of Alonso and is sure to be fired up after the pair nearly collided off the line.
Lap 1: Vettel runs fifth after a scrap with Raikkonen, sixth, through the opening corners.
Lap 1: Paul di Resta has been involved in an incident early and he is touring back to the pits with a puncture.
Lap 1: Down past the old pits for the first time it is Alonso from Webber, Schumacher and Massa.
Lap 1: Alonso chops wickedly across Webber into Turn 1 and holds the lead ahead of the Australian and Schumacher is third.
Lap 1: The five red lights go out and we are racing at Sliverstone!
Alonso stops in the pole position slot and the rest of the field is forming up nicely behind him. Are you ready? We await the lights ...
Rosberg, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Button, Kobayashi, Glock and the HRT pair are all on hard tyres as well.
The field comes around Stowe and Alonso begins to slow the pace as he approaches Vale.
Round Copse and Alonso increases the speed to generate some tyre temperature. This is a quick trip round so far.
Polesitter Alonso has gone for the hard compound for his start from pole.
All 23 drivers leave the grid as Alonso blasts down the Wellington straight and into the stadium complex.
Webber, Schumacher, Vettel, Massa, Raikkonen and Maldonado are all shown on soft rubber.
The formation lap begins at Silverstone. Alonso answers the call and leads the field of 23 away from the grid.
Schumacher gets a final good luck message from his crew before the tyre blankets are lifted away to reveal soft compound Pirellis.
Hamilton is taking a strategy punt with hard rubber on his McLaren from eighth on the grid.
