Lap 9: Button flashes over the line and now has a comfortable 3.8 second margin over team-mate Hamilton.
Lap 8: Perez in 10th has caught up to the back of the developing Massa versus Maldonado scrap, making it a three-car fight for eighth.
Lap 8: Looks like Rubens Barrichello is enjoying watching a grand prix on TV for the first time in nearly 20 years! @rubarrichello: great new camera view from the helmet of the #tororosso driver...it shows what the driver can see...almost nothing kkk
Lap 8: Down the order, Raikkonen is hounding Kobayashi for 11th place and Petrov in 16th is less than one second behind Caterham team-mate Kovalainen.
Lap 8: Alonso is looking racy this afternoon and harries Rosberg's Mercedes down the main straight using DRS.
Lap 7: Vettel has managed to edge away from the chasing pack of Rosberg, Alonso and Webber as he recovers from that grassy off at the first corner.
Lap 7: Maldonado has recovered in ninth and is now climbing all over the back of the Ferrari.
Lap 7: Button's lead is up to 3.3 seconds from Hamilton, with Schumacher now over five seconds further behind the McLaren pair.
Lap 6: Massa in eighth is some 4.5 seconds behind Webber's Red Bull and continuing to drop away every lap.
Lap 6: Vettel resumes but now has Rosberg, Alonso and Webber right on his gearbox.
Lap 6: Maldonado lost six seconds in that trip across the grass and Massa is through into eighth.
Lap 6: Vettel is bouncing off the rev limiter down the straight... and he runs wide over the Turn 1 grass.
Lap 5: Maldonado runs wide and through the gravel at Turn 6, resuming down in 10th.
Lap 5: @Lotus_F1Team is looking on the bright side of Grosjean's retirement: Romain's loss is Kimi's gain; P12 now... Not how we'd we'd want to gain the position
Lap 5: Button has the lead out to 2.6 seconds over Hamilton.
Lap 5: Di Resta is 13th with Vergne 14th, Glock 15th, Kovalainen 16th, Petrov 17th, Pic 18th, Senna 19th and Ricciardo last in 20th.
Lap 5: Replays show Grosjean had a poor start, falling from third on the grid before that terminal assault from Maldonado two laps later.
Lap 4: Behind the top eight, Massa is up to ninth with Kobayashi 10th, Perez 11th and Raikkonen up to 12th spot.
Lap 4: Hulkenberg did not recover from his incident and he is also out of the event.
Lap 4: Alonso has had a great first few laps and is now sixth in his Ferrari, ahead of Maldonado and the delayed Webber.
Lap 4: It looks from the replays as if Webber made a poor start and made contact with Nico Hulkenberg's Force India. The German has subsequently retired.
Lap 3: Replays show the contact at Turn 1 between Ricciardo and Senna, while Vergne also had a moment and skated through the gravel before rejoining.
Lap 3: Mark Webber has dropped to ninth and radioed in that he thinks he has wing damage.
Lap 3: Button clocks the fastest lap to make his lead 2.2 seconds over Hamilton, Schumacher, Vettel and Rosberg as the DRS becomes available.
Lap 3: Maldonado tries a move on Grosjean at Turn 13 and the pair make contact. The Frenchman is forced wide with damage and is out of the race!
Lap 3: Vettel pulls a blinding move on Rosberg down into Turn 9 and takes over fourth from the Mercedes.
Lap 2: Ricciardo also comes in for some running repairs. He leaves the lane after a short stop.
Lap 2: Button leads by 1.3 seconds from team-mate Hamilton and the Mercedes pair.
Lap 2: Hamilton appeared to wheelspin a little as he moved away from pole, allowing team-mate Button clean down the inside into the first corner.
Lap 2: Senna brings his Williams strgith into the pits at the end of the first lap.
Lap 2: Chaos at the rear of the field! Ricciardo and Senna got involved and Hulkenberg is also down to last position.
Lap 1: Around the back of the circuit on lap one it is Button from Hamilton, Schumacher, Rosberg and Vettel.
Lap 1: Hamilton gets away but loses out to team-mate Button into Turn 1 with the Mercedes pair surguing forward!
Lap 1: The five red lights go out and we are racing in 2012!
The last cars are moving into position now and we are ready to rock in Melbourne. We await the lights ...
The field is nicely alligned as they head towards their grid slots.
Hamilton starts to drop the pace ashe comes through Turn 15 and into the final corner.
Round the back of the circuit they come and through the fast flick at Turns 11 and 12, before slowing it down towards the end of the lap.
@OfficialSF1Team reporting: In terms of strategy: @kamui_kobayashi starts on soft tyres. @SChecoPerez on the medium compound.
All 22 cars get away and Hamilton guides his McLaren down to Turn 3.
