Lap 6: Heidfeld is another driver that has had a poor opening to the race. He is down in 19th with Perez another slow starter in 20th, Trulli 21st, D'Ambrosio 22nd, Ricciardo 23rd and Liuzzi some way adrift.
Lap 6: So it's now Hamilton from Vettel, who is now being pressured by Button.
Lap 5: Vettel's mistake was inevitable and Hamilton sails though as the Red Bull runs wide at Turn 2.
Lap 5: Hamilton is very strong in the final part of the lap and is once again looking for a way past the Red Bull.
Lap 5: Alonso is shaping up to get back past Rosberg again after losing out with that mistake.
Lap 5: Alguersuari is 15th with Maldonado 16th, Kovalainen 17th and Sutil up to 18th in front of Glock.
Lap 5: Meanwhile, Alonso has run wide at Turn 2, falling behind Rosberg again after being in place to challenge Button.
Lap 4: Hamilton tries another move on Vettel but this is brave defending from the championship leader.
Lap 4: A clear gap is developing between di Resta in ninth and Kobayashi 10th. Petrov is 11th with Buemi 13th and Barrichello in 14th spot.
Lap 4: Vettel is really struggling for grip, with both McLarens right on his tail.
Lap 4: Liuzzi had a problem in the early stages and has fallen well behind the rest of the field.
Lap 4: Alonso tries to go all the way around Rosberg and makes it into Turn 3... while Hamilton almost grabs the lead from Vettel!
Lap 3: Alonso is setting the pace through the lap and is closing rapidly on Rosberg.
Lap 3: Track conditions are extremely slippery and the drivers deserve credit for that clean first lap.
Lap 3: Hamilton gets good drive up the hill and is chasing close behind Vettel's gearbox on the second tour.
Lap 2: Vettel's lead is half a second from Hamilton, Button, Rosberg, Alonso, Schumacher, Massa and Webber.
Lap 2: Di Resta is up to ninth with Kobayashi in 10th, but Sutil has made a terrible start and has fallen to 20th position.
Lap 2: Alonso tries the inside move through the final corner and is past Schumacher and up into fifth.
Lap 2: Cars slipping and sliding all around the first lap as Alonso tries a brave move to try to get back past Schumacher in the Mercedes.
Lap 1: Around the back of the circuit for the first time it is Vettel from Hamilton, Button and the fast-starting Mercedes of Rosberg.
Lap 1: Vettel gets a very good start and leads into Turn 1 with Hamilton second, Button third and then the Ferrari duo.
Lap 1: The five red lights go out and we are racing in Hungary
The front few rows are now in position and the rest are forming up nicely. We await the lights ...
Vettel heads around the final corner and moves towards the grid with the field in tow behind him.
Sutil is advised on the team radio to drive an intelligent race and stay on the road, with a big chance to get a haul of points this afternoon.
Vettel climbs up the hill round Turn 5 and heads towards the chicane.
Rain continues to fall as intermediate rubber is revealed from under the tyre blankets throughout the field.
The formation lap begins at the Hungaroring and Sebastian Vettel leads the field of 24 away from the grid.
Intermediates look to be the choice of the leading drivers.
Mark Webber puts his gloves on at the last moment and he is ready to roll this afternoon from sixth on the grid.
The engines fire with a minute to the formation lap.
The safety car is touring around to the back of the grid, meaning it will be a normal, standing start.
Mechanics are now bolting on the team's final choice of tyres, which must be in place before the three-minute hooter.
McLaren has been strong in both wet and cold conditions, so the team must be confident of a good result starting just behind Vettel today.
Just five minutes to go now until the start of the formation lap at the Hungaroring.
Track conditions were extremely greasy in the opening laps in '06 and the drivers will certainly have a voyage of discovery this afternoon.
Only one wet grand prix has taken place at this circuit since the inaugural event in 1986 - Jenson Button's famous victory in 2006.
Rain continues to fall over the track as the drivers receive final instructions and advice from the race engineers.
