Schumacher and Kobayashi are not going with the aggressive strategy and are on super-soft rubber.
The formation lap begins at Hockenheim. Sebastian Vettel leads the field of 24 away for 67 racing laps this afternoon.
Vettel rounds the hairpin at Turn 6 and blasts his way towards the Mercedes arena.
The track temperature is up to 35 degrees as hazy sunshine spreads over the track.
The snake of cars enters the stadium section as Vettel begins to slow the pace down and bring the field closer to him.
Round the final corner and Vettel gives it a boot to generate some tyre and brake temperature.
The front few rows are in position and the rest form up neatly. This should be a cracking race.

We await the lights ...
Lap 1: The five red lights go out and we are racing in Germany!
Lap 1: Vettel drops the hammer but Alonso is alongside and they slow eachother down, allowing Massa into the lead!
Lap 1: Through the Mercedes Arena it is Massa from Alonso, Vettel and a charging Hamilton.
Lap 2: Buemi is touring with the rear wing missing and is destined for retirement - probably after contact at Turn 6.
Lap 2: Hamilton pulled a great move to demote Webber to fifth.
Lap 2: Massa caught out the scrap between Alonso and Vettel and leads into the second lap at Hockenheim.
Lap 2: Adrian Sutil is into the pits and is out after a long stop.
Lap 2: Hamilton is now tailing Vettel and looking to take advantage of the McLaren's straight line speed.
Lap 3: Button is sixth, from Kubica and a fast-starting Michael Schumacher.
Lap 3: Alguersuari came into the pits with the front wing missing. It is likely that he rear-ended team-mate Buemi, hurting Toro Rosso's afternoon.
Lap 3: Replays show a poor start for Vettel and he lost out to Massa while failing to stop Alonso also getting through.
Lap 3: Liuzzi was also in for repairs and he is back on track but almost last.
Lap 4: Gaps are beginning to space out between the leading contenders with Massa leading by 1.5 seconds over the line from Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton, Webber and Button.
Lap 4: Replays at Turn 6 show that Alguersuari missed his brakes and rammed team-mate Buemi. Liuzzi ran over the debris and stopped to have it checked.
Lap 4: Trulli is into the pits and the Lotus is pushed back into the garage. His day could be over already. Kovalainen is up in 15th.
Lap 4: Hamilton has drifted off the back of Vettel's Red Bull and is no longer in range to make a move.
Lap 5: Schumacher had a great run though the opening lap and is right behind Kubica in a battle over seventh.
Lap 5: Rubens Barrichello made a poor start and has slipped to 11th. He claims he was pushed towards the wall at the start by Kobayashi and wants the team to speak to the FIA race director about it.
Lap 6: Sutil is back into the pits for a second time and rejoins after further work is complete. He is 22nd.
Lap 6: Alonso takes the fastest lap away from team-mate Alonso with a tour in 1m19.292s.
Lap 7: Rosberg is a second behind team-mate Schumacher in ninth.
Lap 7: Alonso sets another fastest lap and he is closing on leader Massa.
Lap 7: Liuzzi is into the pits also for a second time as Force India's disastrous day continues. Trulli was sent back out by Lotus but he is touring in to retire.
Lap 8: Kamui Kobayashi made a solid start and runs in 10th place, with a disgruntled Barrichello 11th, Petrov 12th and Hulkenberg 13th.
Lap 8: Massa responds with his fastest lap, pegging the lead gap at 1.5 seconds.
Lap 8: Pedro de la Rosa is 14th so far with Kovalainen 12 seconds behind him in 15th, di Grassi 16th, Senna 17th and Glock 18th.
Lap 8: The top six are lapping in the 1m19s bracket with no sign yet of the pace fading on the super-softs.
Lap 9: Button has been wide at Turn 1 and is now slipping back from Webber in sixth.
Lap 9: Yamamoto is 19th and being caught quickly by a recovering Alguersuari. Sutil is 21st and Liuzzi last in 22nd.
Lap 9: Hamilton has had a slow lap in his McLaren and Webber is now homing in on the championship leader.
Lap 10: There is some slight evidence of graining on Hamilton's rear tyres and it may be the McLaren's low-downforce setup is beginning to hurt the rear tyres.
Lap 10: Kobayashi in 10th is doing a fine job hanging on to the Mercedes pair in front. He is beginning to drop Barrichello just slightly.
