Lap 62: Hamilton is responding to that pressure and sets the fastest lap of the race. 1m18.025s stamps the leader's authority on proceedings.
Lap 61: Schumacher defends to the inside on the long run down the penultimate straight, but Buemi comes back into Turn 1 and passes Schumacher to retake eighth.
Lap 61: Alonso is right with the world champion and this could be a very close finish with just over eight laps to go.
Lap 61: Hamilton leads by 2.1 seconds over team-mate Button in a thrilling Canadian Grand Prix.
Lap 60: Sebastien Buemi wants the eighth place back that he has occupied for much of the race. But, to get it he'll have to pass Michael Schumacher.
Lap 60: Button is closing on Hamilton at the moment and his tyres look to be in the best shape thanks to his smooth driving style.
Lap 59: Webber is making progress on his soft tyres and is closing on team-mate Vettel. His pace isn't enough to threaten the podium places currently, however.
Lap 59: Hamilton will be happy to let that scrap rage behind as he tries to protect his rubber to the finish.
Lap 58: So, it's now a McLaren one-two in Canada as Hamilton leads by 3.1 seconds from Button. Alonso will want to make amends for that slip in traffic and is right on Button to take the place back.
Lap 58: Alguersuari runs wide at the Turn 8 chicane. He loses a couple of seconds and that is enough to put Liuzzi right on his gearbox. Liuzzi needs no second invitation and takes 13th from the Spaniard.
Lap 57: Massa - now free of the Force India pair - is homing in on Nico Hulkenberg very quickly. When he catches the Williams the battle will be on for the final point.
Lap 57: A mangle in traffic delayed Alonso and Button steamed around the outside to take second at Turn 8.
Lap 56: Button has done it on Alonso!
Lap 56: Webber finally finds some speed on the soft tyres and clocks a 1m18.655s but he has an 11 second gap to catch team-mate Vettel.
Lap 56: Timo Glock is in the pits and there looks to be trouble for the Virgin driver. He was in 20th and last position.
Lap 55: Replays show Sutil waving his hand in the air in disgust at Kovalainen as Massa was pulling that move on him.
Lap 54: Button remains right with Alonso's Ferrari but is still to make a move that could give McLaren another one-two.
Lap 54: Massa takes advantage of the traffic scenario and slices up the inside of the Force India at Turn 6. The Ferrari is now 11th.
Lap 54: Alguersuari is coming back towards the Sutil-Massa fight and it's now a three car train as they attempt to lap Kovalainen.
Lap 53: Webber has come out 20 seconds off the lead but isn't quicker despite his fresh rubber.
Lap 53: Massa is on the tail of Adrian Sutil and the fight for 11th place continues.
Lap 53: Button is the man on the move now as the track seems to be coming to the McLaren men. He is right on the case of Alonso now.
Lap 52: Hamilton is building his lead at the moment and is now 3.2 seconds up on Alonso.
Lap 52: Buemi has been into the pits from eighth. This promotes Schumacher with the Swiss rejoining in ninth spot.
Lap 52: That pack all plan to run to the finish and Webber's only hope now is that he finds great pace on soft rubber while the others run out of grip.
Lap 51: Massa is on the move towards the points. He passed Liuzzi one lap ago and has just overtaken Alguersuari for 12th place.
Lap 51: Hamilton leads by 1.9 seconds over Alonso. Button is a further 2.6 seconds behind, with Vettel fading slightly now 9.8 seconds off the lead.
Lap 51: Webber seems set for fifth place no matter what he does. He pits.
Lap 50: Alonso is now looking to pass Webber, who surely must pit shortly.
Lap 50: There is chaos further back as Hulkenberg in tenth leads a train with Sutil, Alguersuari, Massa and Liuzzi all right behind him.
Lap 50: This has been a truly sensational grand prix so far and there are still 20 laps of action to go.
Lap 50: The McLaren man sends another great move into Turn 1 and Hamilton leads again in Canada.
Lap 50: Hamilton is right on Webber for the lead now
Lap 49: Buemi has now caught Rosberg and we have a battle looming over the seventh position.
Lap 49: Alonso will look to pay back Hamilton for his earlier opportunism as the McLaren looks for a way to take the lead.
Lap 49: The gap is even closer now and a move for the lead is developing here.
Lap 49: Jarno Trulli retires from the race and that looks like brakes all the way as he dejectedly jumps out of the Lotus.
Lap 48: Hamilton is now just 1.7 seconds behind Webber, who has extensive rear graining in the Red Bull.
Lap 48: Vettel is told on the radio that the Red Bull team is managing an issue, whatever that means.
Lap 48: Behind this amazingly tight scrap at the front, Kubica is sixth but 42 seconds down on the leader. Rosberg is four seconds further back in seventh.
