Turner pleased with SEAT's wet pace
Darren Turner has been surprised by the pace of his SEAT Leon TDi in wet conditions and believes the team have yet to unlock all of its potential
Today's qualifying session for the opening round of the season at Brands Hatch started wet and dried throughout until the drivers changed onto slicks for their final runs.
Turner was quickest of all for most of the wet session, but dropped to sixth place as the drying track produced quicker times right at the end of qualifying and a red flag prevented him from completing his final run.
"We don't understand it, but when we put the wet tyres on the car feels really good. It might be because the front axle is 50kg heavier than the petrol car and the extra weight helps the front tyres to work better in the wet.
"We know the car has got huge potential in certain areas and we know we have to maximise those areas. For example, it's super quick down the straights but it comes at a cost because we have slower apex speeds."
He believes both SEATs could have qualified higher than fourth and sixth thanks to the step forward the team have made with the car.
"The boys at the team did some amazing research and we've come here with a whole bunch of solutions and set-ups that have allowed us to be on the pace.
"We were unlucky in qualifying. We seemed to get out one-lap too late every time the track was drying. Then of course we had the red flag at the end."
